Hm. I must be mixing up symptoms, I think. I’ll double-check when I get a
chance to reboot.

Would it not in any case be good to have the drm driver + firmware in the
initramfs to initialize displays with their correct resolution in early
boot already?

The kernel is built with Debian’s config:

$ grep I915 /boot/config-4.3.0
CONFIG_DRM_I915=m
# CONFIG_DRM_I915_PRELIMINARY_HW_SUPPORT is not set
CONFIG_SND_HDA_I915=y
