Bug#1071258: [BUG] Additional information / 1071258

Dear Maintainers,

Here is some more information about bug report 1071258 affecting my 
Lenovo L570.

1) The bug was first reported as 1071236. It was closed by the 
maintainer, who suggested it was possibly due to a hardware failure.

Attempted resolution:

Booting the machine (with the Debian 12 installation) with the linux 
image from the previous (Debian 11) installation (which I had not 
removed). In other words: booting with linux-image-5.10.0-29-amd64 
instead of linux-image-6.1.0-21-amd64.

Result:

The system works normally. The erratic behaviour of keyboard, trackpad, 
and external mouse does NOT occur.


2) A commentator suggested that the bug might be related to a similar 
problem documented in: 
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=217718 for AMD CPUs.

Attempted resolution:

 From command lscpu, the CPU of the machine is

Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-7200U CPU @ 2.50GHz

and therefore the solution suggested in the link above is not applicable.


3) I considered the possibility that the installation of the new linux 
image during the upgrade from Debian 11 to Debian 12 had been faulty.

Attempted resolution:

Re-installing linux-image-6.1.0-21-amd64 via Synaptic.

Result:

The problem does not disappear.


4) Determining whether the bug was introduced by the passage from kernel 
5.10.0 to 6.1.0, or whether it was an error introduced between releases 
of image 6.1.0-*.

Attempted resolution:

I looked at the image versions available in Synaptic, installed the 
oldest one available: linux-image-6.1.0-11-amd64, and restarted the system.

Result:

The problem occurs again. I did not try installing other images between 
6.1.10-11 and 6.1.10-21.

At this stage, I must leave it to you to investigate and suggest further 
operations that may help diagnose the problem and ferret out the bug. I 
look forward to receiving suggestions as to which tests, log extracts, 
boot parameters, I would have to look into. Please be advised that in 
the coming four weeks I will not have access to the troublesome machine 
because of travel -- and I will therefore be unable to provide feedback.
