Package: src:linux
Version: 5.9.6-1
Severity: normal
Dear Maintainer,
* What led up to the situation?
Plugged in QNAP 5GigE USB ethernet.
dmesg says:
[346264.680355] usb 2-1: new SuperSpeed Gen 1 USB device number 3 using xhci_hcd
[346264.705280] usb 2-1: New USB device found, idVendor=1c04, idProduct=0015, bcdDevice= 1.01
[346264.705285] usb 2-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
[346264.705288] usb 2-1: Product: QNAP QNA-UC5G1T USB to 5GbE Adapter
[346264.705290] usb 2-1: Manufacturer: QNAP
[346264.705292] usb 2-1: SerialNumber: 06I14039
[346264.754242] usbcore: registered new interface driver cdc_ether
* What outcome did you expect instead?
usb0 or similar network device should also appear in "ifconfig -a" output (or in /sys/class/net/). Didn't happen.
The problem is cdc_ether no longer claims aqc111 devices since this upstream change:
commit b7ebee2f95fb0fa2862d5ed2de707f872c311393
Author: Dmitry Bezrukov <dmitry.bezrukov@aquantia.com>
Date: Sat Mar 23 13:59:53 2019 +0000
net: usb: aqc111: Extend HWID table by QNAP device
New device of QNAP based on aqc111u
Add this ID to blacklist of cdc_ether driver as well
Signed-off-by: Dmitry Bezrukov <dmitry.bezrukov@aquantia.com>
Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
While this USB device advertises a CDC Ethernet class interface, the cdc_ether driver is not going to claim any AQC111 device. The aqc111 driver is expected to claim them. Of course, it requires that CONFIG_USB_NET_AQC111 be enabled.
Chrome OS ran into the same problem:
