Message-ID<xCXdL-8iq-1@gated-at.bofh.it>
Package: texlive-fonts-extra
Version: 2018.20190131-1
Severity: normal

Quick report: an apt-get upgrade hangs when installing
texlive-fonts-extra_2018.20190227-1_all.deb. Neede tp kill process.

Running
dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/texlive-fonts-extra_2018.20190227-1_all.deb
directly also hangs in same way. Actually it looks like a crash:-
Running with
dpkg -i -D10 /var/cache/apt/archives/texlive-fonts-extra_2018.20190227-1_all.deb

The process runs for many minutes and then appears to crash (the screen
also blanks and has to be restored).

Hi

Can you please the full log of the installation?

And maybe remove the deb and re-download it, please.

Disk space is fine, do you have enough space left?

I will attach dpkg.log.gz unless you are asking for
/var/log/dpkg/history.log.

I will try that later. Meanwhile:
# cksum ./cache/apt/archives/texlive-fonts-extra_2018.20190227-1_all.deb

root@shelf:/var# sha1sum ./cache/apt/archives/texlive-fonts-extra_2018.20190227-1_all.deb
249ea879c68110dafe596f42c80c00d8f3192d36 ./cache/apt/archives/texlive-fonts-extra_2018.20190227-1_all.deb

> Disk space is fine, do you have enough space left?

I did wonder about that, especially /tmp/. I did check dmesg after the
run/crash but there didn't seem to be anything relevant there.

Main space has 158GB free, but /tmp is on RAM:

# findmnt /tmp
TARGET SOURCE FSTYPE OPTIONS
/tmp tmpfs tmpfs rw,nosuid,nodev
with (by default) 7.8GB free.

This machine has 16GB of RAM, and I think the tmpfs can use up to 50%,
but I might be wrong about that.

From the debug messages with -D10 on dpkg, there were a vast number of
files being, was it "deferred", and I did wonder whether those entries
were going on a stack somewhere which might have overflowed?

As a temporary fix, I tried "holding" texlive-fonts-extra, but that
didn't work out, so I removed it, and then completed the apt-get
upgrade. I marked some of the dependent packages manually for install
which all wnet through smoothly. But obviously I would like the package
back.

Just a quick reply: out of time this morning, but hope to reload etc
later today.

Thanks for prompt reply,

ael

Hi

That doesn't help indeed, nothing of interest in there.
Nor the history.

Could you run the dpkg from the command line with debugging (as you did)
and send me the output (private email is fine if you don't want in in
the BTS).

Same as mine.

definitely fine.

Could be critical. The file, the unpacked version etc all might be
located in tmp.

Can you for the time being set /tmp to something outside of RAM
(maybe export TMPDIR=/var/tmp is already enough?) and retry.

That sounds like the most probable reason.

If this is not the case, you or I should reassign that to dpkg, this has
nothing to do with the texlive package per se, but is a dpkg issue.

No idea, sorry, this is dpkg parlance.

Yes. That seems to be the solution. Works with TMPDIR=/var/tmp :-)

I tried to monitor du -sh /var/tmp/ during the run, but I didn't see
more than 32K in use. Maybe I just missed it, but dpkg was writing a lot
of debug info during the run, so I thought that there was a good chance
of catching something.

But, ho, hum, surely needing more than around 8GB of temporary space is
a bit extreme? Is there anything you can do to reduce the overhead?
I know that you don't like splitting texlive packages too far, but I do
have a fairly powerful machine with plenty of RAM, so it is a bit
alarming that it falls over in default mode.

Thanks for the help. Not sure whether the bug should be closed : it
might help others who hit the same problem.
