Package: apt-listbugs
Version: 0.1.47
Severity: normal
apt-listbugs sometimes gives the following error:
Retrieving bug reports... 0% Fail
E: HTTP GET failed
Retry downloading bug information? [Y/n]
It is not clear whether the error comes from the package itself or
from the remote side, but in the latter case, the reason should be
output (e.g. HTTP error code).

I have seen that error too, in recent times, but only very sporadically. > > It is not clear whether the error comes from the package itself or > from the remote side, but in the latter case, the reason should be > output (e.g. HTTP error code). The error message is produced by apt-listbugs, when it catches an exception of class SOAP::HTTPStreamError, raised by the SOAP library. I am convinced that it depends on a communication error with the server (the Debian BTS). I can try to modify apt-listbugs, so that it prints some more information about the exception on stderr, but I am not sure it can be done easily enough. Moreover, since, as I said, the error shows up very sporadically, it's hard to test. Do you have a reliable way to artificially obtain that error? -- http://www.inventati.org/frx/ There's not a second to spare! To the laboratory! ..................................................... I had tried playing with the -u option, but, unfortunately, if nothing
is listening to the specified port, the error is different (as it is
reasonable):
$ apt-listbugs -u https://localhost:443/cgi-bin/soap.cgi list apt
Retrieving bug reports... 0% Fail
Error retrieving bug reports from the server with the following error message:
E: Connection refused - Connection refused - connect(2) for "localhost" port 443 (localhost:443)
It could be because your network is down, or because of broken proxy servers, or the BTS server itself is down. Check network configuration and try again
Retry downloading bug information? [Y/n]
I am afraid that an actual SOAP server needs to listen to the
appropriate port of the test destination host.
But I don't know how to setup such server, and, above all, I have no
idea which kind of protocol error it should artificially inject into
the communication...
After all, you wish apt-listbugs gave more information, exactly because
we are trying to investigate this: what kind of stream error is
sporadically encountered, while interacting with the Debian BTS SOAP
interface.
If we already knew, there would be no point in investigating!
I am testing with apt-listbugs more often than usual, in the hope to
"naturally" encounter the error again...

I'm not sure whether this is the same problem, but I'm seeing the server return an HTML page demanding that the client enable Javascript. A log is attached. apt-listbugs fails to parse the returned data. At the time, I tried accessing packages.debian.org in a browser and saw a similar demand. But that's working normally now, while apt-listbugs isn't. -- Michael On Fri, Jan 09, 2026 at 23:37:15 +0100, Francesco Poli wrote: > Control: tags -1 + moreinfo > > > On Thu, 8 Jan 2026 17:49:57 +0100 Vincent Lefevre wrote: > > [...] > > apt-listbugs sometimes gives the following error: > > > > Retrieving bug reports... 0% Fail > > E: HTTP GET failed > > Retry downloading bug information? That was over Tor. It later worked, but is failing again. While it doesn't look like the exact error Vincent saw, it seemed to start happening around the same time, and such "anti-bot" measures don't always act consistently. Should I re-file that, possibly on another package? -- Michael

Package: apt-listbugs
Version: 0.1.47
Followup-For: Bug #1125030
I'm now almost constantly getting this "E: HTTP GET failed" error.
No proxies etc, just a direct connection.
Full unredacted session log is at https://pastebin.com/raw/XsJrCDN8

| Subject | Bug#1125030: apt-listbugs: Error also appears in 0.1.44 and 0.1.42, look like a server problem |
| Message-ID | <MglO2-cExZ-5@gated-at.bofh.it> |
| In reply to | #1277598 |
Package: apt-listbugs Version: 0.1.44 Followup-For: Bug #1125030 Hi, I see the same problem appearing with 0.1.42 and 0.1.44. Two older unstable VMs that I hadn't run for a couple months, so a ton of packages need updating. But both bring up this error consistently, but also not always... I can run 20 apt-listbugs in a row, not a problem, and the 21st fails, and then the next attempt the 7th fails, or the 3rd. So, my money is on a problem with the actual SOAP server/interface. I also just now in trying to add to this bug thread encountered problems with the BTS. Namely, a 503 unavailable error. In a soap call inside debianbts.py. Just once, but it supports the "it's a server problem" hypothesis. -- System Information: Debian Release: trixie/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (990, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 6.12.6-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU threads; PREEMPT) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8), LANGUAGE not set Shell: /bin/sh linked to /usr/bin/dash Init: sysvinit (via /sbin/init) Versions of packages apt-listbugs depends on: ii apt 2.9.21 ii distro-info 1.12 ii ruby 1:3.1 ii ruby-debian 0.3.10+b9 ii ruby-gettext 3.4.9-1 ii ruby-soap4r 2.0.5-8 ii ruby-unicode 0.4.4.4-1+b5 ii ruby-xmlparser 0.7.3-4+b4 Versions of packages apt-listbugs recommends: ii ruby-httpclient 2.8.3+git20211122.4658227-1 pn ruby-sys-proctable <none> Versions of packages apt-listbugs suggests: ii chromium [www-browser] 131.0.6778.204-1 ii elinks [www-browser] 0.18.0-1 ii firefox [www-browser] 106.0-1 ii lynx [www-browser] 2.9.2-1 ii reportbug 13.0.2 ii sensible-utils 0.0.24 ii w3m [www-browser] 0.5.3+git20230121-2.1 ii xdg-utils 1.2.1-2 -- no debconf information

Dear all,
thanks for providing transcripts and additional information about this
issue. It was helpful.
First off, the good news:
* I managed to reproduce the issue (unfortunately, it seems to me that
it is happening more and more often, lately)
* I managed to modify apt-listbugs, so that it is more explicit about
which error it received on the HTTP stream, as in:
$ apt-listbugs list apt
Retrieving bug reports... 0% Fail
E: HTTP GET failed (503: Service Unavailable)
Retry downloading bug information? [Y/n]
* this modification will be included in the next upload of the
'apt-listbugs' package to Debian unstable
Then the bad news:
* the problem seems to always be a "503: Service Unavailable" HTTP
error: it looks like a issue with the server (the Debian BTS SOAP
interface)
* I think a bug report should be filed against pseudo-package
'bugs.debian.org': any volunteers?
Bye and thanks again to you all!

I think the root cause is the 503 on the server side,
but apt-listbugs is dealing with it poorly because
it discards all partial results and starts over from
scratch after querying the user. Instead it should
retry the failed operation only and continue, and only
error out when the number of failures exceeds some count.
This change is not a full solution but illustrates the problem:

Hi, trying to debug something I thought was due to some buggy package I wrote a python program to help me find the culprit that uses bts api. status = bts.get_status(bug_id)[0] No problem. Rock solid compared to the constant E: HTTP GET failed I get from apt-listbugs. I don't think it is something related to some ruby packages recently updated because I've machines that run older versions that still experience the problem. If I had to put my money on something I'd say fastly don't like how ruby-httpclient make the request (looks like a pretty old library) but like python more (python3-httplib2, python3-pycurl). this is apt-listbugs on http/80 when it fails 13:17:19.153446 enp2s0 Out IP XXX.49176 > 151.101.2.132.http: Flags [S], seq 3148029402, win 64240, options [mss 1460,sackOK,TS val 3396528468 ecr 0,nop,wscale 10], length 0 13:17:19.158963 enp2s0 In IP 151.101.2.132.http > XXX.49176: Flags [S.], seq 1398688828, ack 3148029403, win 65535, options [mss 1392,sackOK,TS val 1515822691 ecr 3396528468,nop,wscale 9], length 0 13:17:19.159035 enp2s0 Out IP XXX.49176 > 151.101.2.132.http: Flags [.], ack 1, win 63, options [nop,nop,TS val 3396528473 ecr 1515822691], length 0 13:17:19.159968 enp2s0 Out IP XXX.49176 > 151.101.2.132.http: Flags [P.], seq 1:1275, ack 1, win 63, options [nop,nop,TS val 3396528474 ecr 1515822691], length 1274: HTTP: POST /cgi-bin/soap.cgi HTTP/1.1 13:17:19.165200 enp2s0 In IP 151.101.2.132.http > XXX.49176: Flags [.], ack 1275, win 275, options [nop,nop,TS val 1515822697 ecr 3396528474], length 0 13:17:19.165201 enp2s0 In IP 151.101.2.132.http > XXX.49176: Flags [P.], seq 1:335, ack 1275, win 275, options [nop,nop,TS val 1515822697 ecr 3396528474], length 334: HTTP: HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently 13:17:19.165201 enp2s0 In IP 151.101.2.132.http > XXX.49176: Flags [F.], seq 335, ack 1275, win 275, options [nop,nop,TS val 1515822697 ecr 3396528474], length 0 13:17:19.165261 enp2s0 Out IP XXX.49176 > 151.101.2.132.http: Flags [.], ack 335, win 63, options [nop,nop,TS val 3396528480 ecr 1515822697], length 0 13:17:19.165568 enp2s0 Out IP XXX.49176 > 151.101.2.132.http: Flags [F.], seq 1275, ack 336, win 63, options [nop,nop,TS val 3396528480 ecr 1515822697], length 0 13:17:19.169754 enp2s0 In IP 151.101.2.132.http > XXX.49176: Flags [.], ack 1276, win 275, options [nop,nop,TS val 1515822702 ecr 3396528480], length 0 -- Ivan Sergio Borgonovo https://www.webthatworks.it https://www.borgonovo.net

My python utility that access bts via python3-debianbts worked with no error for a while while apt-listbugs was continuously failing with HTTP errors... but now even my python script fails with HTTP errors. Under the hypothesis that it was an anti-DOS/Fastly problem I added some headers to make the request seem more "authentic" but with unsatisfactory results. Although both python scripts have a greater success rate at accessing bts than apt-listbugs the problem persists. thanks -- Ivan Sergio Borgonovo https://www.webthatworks.it https://www.borgonovo.net

You need a more recent version of Debian, to have an apt-listbugs that correctly supports HTTPS. -- http://www.inventati.org/frx/ There's not a second to spare!
