Source: installation-birthday Severity: wishlist X-Debbugs-Cc: debian@rocketjump.eu Hi lamby! A great addition to installation-birthday would be to notify the logged in user via notify-send about the event. Newer desktop installations usually come without a configured MTA, and sometimes even without cron. Greets, Lee -- System Information: Debian Release: 12.9 APT prefers stable-security APT policy: (1001, 'stable-security'), (1001, 'proposed-updates'), (1001, 'stable'), (500, 'stable-updates') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 6.11.5+bpo-amd64 (SMP w/8 CPU threads; PREEMPT) Kernel taint flags: TAINT_OOT_MODULE, TAINT_UNSIGNED_MODULE Locale: LANG=en_GB.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8), LANGUAGE not set Shell: /bin/sh linked to /usr/bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) LSM: AppArmor: enabled

Oh, a good idea. I don't have an MTA anymore, so now even I, the
author of installation-birthday, don't receive notifications anymore.
Not sure how it might work without cron — a question perhaps for
another bug entirely. But assuming that cron is at least installed,
would you think a notify-send notification with no expiry * would work?
That would at least mean that if it triggered at 3am or something
unholy, you might have a chance of seeing it in the morning.
* Or perhaps an expiry of 24 hours.
Regards,
