I have just uploaded glueviz_1.17.1+dfsg-2.1_source.changes as an NMU
to DELAYED/7-day to fix the two bugs #1093476 and #1092554.  (I'm not
in the debian-astro-team, so won't be able to push my changes to
salsa.  Please can someone on the team either upload -3 including this
diff before my -2.1 hits unstable, or ensure that this gets
incorporated into the salsa repo!)

The tiny debdiff is below.

For #1083421, can someone who knows the package tell me what
debian/glue should actually point to?  I was very unclear from a quick
glance at the source code.

The quick and _dirty_ option would be to manually merge the changes
from a newer EASY-INSTALL-ENTRY-SCRIPT ... :-|
There are so many installed on every system to look at.

This would break again when 1.18.0 is packaged

Unfortunately, that won't work :-(

The only solution is to delete /usr/bin/glue entirely, as 1.17 no
longer provides a gui front end.  Instead, there are two new packages:
glue-qt and glue-jupyter that provide front ends; see
https://pypi.org/project/glue-core/ So one or both of these will need
to be packaged.  (And my guess is that glue-qt will be *much* easier
to package than glue-jupyter.)

As a result of this internal change to glue_core, the glueviz binary
package needs to be replaced by (presumably) the glue-qt package.
Something like:

source: glueviz (= glue-core PyPI package)
 -> binary: python3-glue

source: glue-qt
 -> binary: glueviz

I don't have the capacity to do this work, I'm afraid.

It would make *much* more sense to rename the source and binary
packages here, to have the structure:

source: python-glue-core
binary: python3-glue-core
breaks/replaces: python3-glue (and possibly also glueviz (<< ...),
  depending on where the support files end up)

source: python-glue-gt
binary: python3-glue-gt
provides: glueviz
breaks/replaces: glueviz (<< ...)

That way, there is also space to have the following if it is wanted at
some point:

source: python-glue-jupyter
binary: python3-glue-jupyter
provides: glueviz-jupyter

Hmm, as the package is called "glue_core" but it provides a module
called "glue" (as in: "import glue"; I wish packages wouldn't do
this!), perhaps it would be better to keep the current name and have:

source: python-glue-core or python-glue (not sure which is better)
binary: python3-glue
provides: python3-glue-core
breaks/replaces: possibly glueviz (<< ...), depending on where the
  support files end up)

And for this one, we could keep the same source name as at present, to
make less work for everyone:

source: glueviz
binary: glueviz
provides: python3-glue-gt

and then later, if wanted, there's the possibility of a
jupyter-based package; if it turns out that it provides the command
"jupyter glue" (I haven't checked), then calling the package
"jupyter-glue" with a virtual name of "glueviz-jupyter" or vice versa
might make sense.

On salsa, we could rename the glueviz.git repository as
python-glue.git or python-glue-core.git and create a fresh glueviz.git
repository for the glue-gt frontend; it might otherwise be confusing.
An alternative is to keep glueviz.git for the glue-core Python package
and create a new repo called glue-gt.git or glueviz-gt.git for the
frontend.

I've thought some more about this one, too.

The current version of glueviz has dropped its dependency on
qtconsole.  In combination with #1083421, this means that my patch is
pointless.  The following should happen instead:

python3-glue(-core) - this should drop its dependency on
python3-qtconsole completely.  It also only depends on Qt via the
python3-qtpy interface, so it should drop all pyqt5 dependencies.
(But it should certainly depend on qtpy; this is imported in
glue/plugins/dendro_viewer/layer_style_editor.py and
glue/plugins/tools/python_export.py, even though it is not listed in
the install_requires section of setup.cfg.)

The new glueviz (=glue-qt): this should depend on a Qt package; it
might well be possible to switch to PyQt6 at this point - definitely
worth trying as PyQt5 is end-of-life.

I've just cancelled the NMU, as it is now clear that it doesn't work.

Seems like I am still thinking about this package quite a lot ;-)

FYI: I've just uploaded python-qtconsole 5.6.1-4 to unstable, so when
the new glueviz (=glue-qt) is uploaded, it will need to depend on the
correct pyqt5 libraries as described in this report.
