Package: zfs-dkms
Version: 2.2.6-2
Severity: important
Tags: upstream
The build log shows a warning: "kmem_cache_create" redefined so I suspect an
upstream fix is required.

Much appreciated, Craig! I started using zfs a year ago and was naively thinking that the Debian package system somehow "handled" things. I see that is not the case. What can be done better? On Sunday, December 8, 2024 7:53:03 P.M. CST Craig Sanders wrote: > If you use ZFS (or ANY other non-standard kernel module, including other > dkms modules) then it is strongly recommended that you **DO NOT UPGRADE > YOUR KERNEL UNTIL YOU HAVE VERIFIED THAT THE NEW KERNEL WORKS WITH THE > MODULE(S) YOU NEED**. > > This can not be emphasised enough I agree. After reading up more on this (thanks to pointers in the upstream bug), I learned about the "META" file from zfs that notes the maximum kernel version and have since backed off to 6.10. I sent a note directly to the pkg-zfsonlinux-devel mailing list suggesting that it would be helpful to indeed emphasize this more to users of Debian zfs packages. It seems my email got lost, so I'll just re-ask the question here: could the maximum linux version be better conveyed to package users? For example could there be a package conflict added to prevent me from upgrading the kernel? [ ... lots of great advice, snipped ... ] -Steve
