SubjectBug#1004488: Update grpc to new upstream version 1.37
Message-ID<DKGYF-1Ck-3@gated-at.bofh.it>
Package: grpc
Version: 1.30.2-3
Severity: wishlist

While trying to update ruby-gitlab-labkit I got this error
Could not find 'grpc' (>= 1.37) - did find: [grpc-1.30.2]
(Gem::MissingSpecVersionError)

Please update grpc to 1.37. I'd be happy to help with the update too.

A work in progress packaging is available [1]. It's mostly OK, but
the Ruby bindings still need work.
Would it be better to split that out and you can update that as a
standalone package whenever you need?

Thanks, I will give it a try.

I think keeping this in sync with grpc is best option. I usually get
between one to three months of time to update it depending on which
version I currently have.

 What's your status?

I've further updated the package [1]. Now Ruy bindings look OK.
Please test it and let me know the result. Then I can upload it to
experimental.

OK, I have uploaded those to p.d.o [1]. Small local testing shows
those might be in good shape. Please report back in some days how you
see the status.

Thanks for reminding me about porterboxes, that option did not occur to
me.

When using the debs from your repo to build gitaly (using
--extra-package option), I got this from sbuild,

missing:
     pkg:
      package: libgrpc22
      version: 1.44.0-1
      architecture: amd64
      unsat-dependency: libprotobuf30:amd64 (>= 3.19.4)
     depchains:

I think this will need a rebuild since there is only libprotobuf31 now.
I think you can upload to experimental directly and we can do more
testing in experimental.

Uploaded to experimental, accepted and built. Well, it FTBFS on i386
at the moment but seems easy to fix. Other than that, it should be
fine. Please test it soon and let me know if you find any problems.

With ruby-grpc-tools 1.30.2,

(debian-sid)pravi@mahishi:~$ dpkg -L ruby-grpc-tools
/.
/usr
/usr/bin
/usr/bin/grpc_tools_ruby_protoc
/usr/bin/grpc_tools_ruby_protoc_plugin
/usr/share
/usr/share/doc
/usr/share/doc/ruby-grpc-tools
/usr/share/doc/ruby-grpc-tools/changelog.Debian.gz
/usr/share/doc/ruby-grpc-tools/copyright
/usr/share/rubygems-integration
/usr/share/rubygems-integration/all
/usr/share/rubygems-integration/all/gems
/usr/share/rubygems-integration/all/gems/grpc-tools-1.30.2

/usr/share/rubygems-integration/all/gems/grpc-tools-1.30.2/bin/grpc_tools_ruby_protoc_plugin
/usr/share/rubygems-integration/all/gems/grpc-tools-1.30.2/platform_check.rb
/usr/share/rubygems-integration/all/gems/grpc-tools-1.30.2/version.rb
/usr/share/rubygems-integration/all/plugins
/usr/share/rubygems-integration/all/specifications
/usr/share/rubygems-integration/all/specifications/grpc-tools-1.30.2.gemspec

and with 1.44.0

(debian-sid)pravi@mahishi:~$ dpkg -L ruby-grpc-tools
/.
/usr
/usr/bin
/usr/bin/grpc_tools_ruby_protoc
/usr/bin/grpc_tools_ruby_protoc_plugin
/usr/share
/usr/share/doc
/usr/share/doc/ruby-grpc-tools
/usr/share/doc/ruby-grpc-tools/changelog.Debian.gz
/usr/share/doc/ruby-grpc-tools/copyright
/usr/share/rubygems-integration
/usr/share/rubygems-integration/all
/usr/share/rubygems-integration/all/gems
/usr/share/rubygems-integration/all/gems/grpc-tools-1.44.0
/usr/share/rubygems-integration/all/gems/grpc-tools-1.44.0/bin
/usr/share/rubygems-integration/all/gems/grpc-tools-1.44.0/bin/grpc_tools_ruby_protoc
/usr/share/rubygems-integration/all/gems/grpc-tools-1.44.0/bin/grpc_tools_ruby_protoc_plugin
/usr/share/rubygems-integration/all/specifications
/usr/share/rubygems-integration/all/specifications/grpc-tools-1.44.0.gemspec

So looks like two .rb files are missing from the deb.

I think running grpc_tools_ruby_protoc --help as autopkgtest would be
good idea to catch such errors in future.

 Update and recheck.
Please note that armel can't build gRPC at the moment due to GCC ICE
and neither mipsel due to a GCC memory allocation problem. Other than
that it should be OK. But of course need to be find out how to do the
transition when GCC has compilation issues on its own.

I'm stuck on experimental because openssl 3.0 transition broke
ruby-webauthn (#1005444).

So I'm rebuilding a long dependency chain (10+ golang modules to
rebuild) in bullseye currently. After trying many things to fix the
disk space issue, symlinking sbuild's build directory to a different
partition seems to have fixed the build issue.

$ ls -l /var/lib/sbuild/build
lrwxrwxrwx 1 pravi sbuild 24 ഏപ്രി 1 02:43
/var/lib/sbuild/build -> /home/pravi/forge/build/

I will update here once I can test gitlab.

Hopefully gcc maintainers will fix these issues soon.
