I'm closing the reports below. That's installation-reports for Debian 7 with - undefined errors - problems which are likely to have been fixed in the meantime - successful installation Because of the age, there is no chance to analyse them further and therefore they are no longer relevant or of any use for current releases: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=708167 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=710921 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=712842 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=713941 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=718451 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=721841 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=722728 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=722986 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=724601 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=724906 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=725750 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=725915 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=726077 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=728126 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=728397 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=730414 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=731114 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=731776 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=732625 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=734171 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=734641 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=736234 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=737683 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=739912 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=740410 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=740537 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=740770 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=741027 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=741155 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=742947 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=743060 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=743142 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=743435 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=746245 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=746658 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=746926 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=747209 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=748127 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=748385 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=748641 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=749220 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=751393 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=752850 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=757165 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=757244 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=758260 Holger -- Holger Wansing <hwansing@mailbox.org> PGP-Fingerprint: 496A C6E8 1442 4B34 8508 3529 59F1 87CA 156E B076

My thought was, that 64 bit systems are common these days and people will more likely choose the 64 bit images. If that is the wrong one, they get the error message about that and they will try the 32 bit one. Many years ago, it was the apposite: people would choose the 32 bit image if unsure, and that could lead to the problem addressed with this report. And if such message was not implemented in the past 10 years, it will also not be implemented in the next 10 years :-) Therefore I think this bug can be closed. When people understand what a 64/32bit system is, yes. On https://www.debian.org/CD/http-ftp/#stable It is still written "amd64" vs "i386", people will think "I don't have an amd64, I have an intel", and download the i386 image. > And if such message was not implemented in the past 10 years, > it will also not be implemented in the next 10 years :-) Not really 10 years, rather 4 years. But yes, some features don't get implemented, that doesn't mean they shouldn't. At some point we won't have 32bit ports of Debian, but before that we will still have people making the confusion. Samuel

I don't understand the logic. If a bug is raised again and again, that should raise developers' attention. Agree here I seem to be alone raising the concern. I tend to think that my colleague wouldn't be alone making the mistake, and we just do not get the grumbling signal of people realizing after installation that they got a 32bit system, and will just think "bleh, dumb Debian again" and not bother making a report. > Samuel please respect the work of Holger Wansing and leave this BR closed and > > > > If you know, that the issue you reported (and gets closed here) is still existing > > > > in recent installation images, please file a new report for that! I even less understand the logic. Yes, the bug is still existing: the installer doesn't warn about installing 32bit on 64bit. But reporting a new bug report would leave the old one unseen. And it'd then be even less informative: with the new bug report only we would not remember that nobody took the care to implement it while it was reported 4 years ago. > The win-win-win situation is > * There is a BR that i386 image checks for amd64 host and informs user about it > * Holgers good work is respected > * BTS has only open BR that deserve attention, which keeps developers > motivated to check BTS for what needs to be done I completely support Holgers' good work, that's not the question! But point 3 contradicts what you wrote above: not having the information that the bug was already reported 4 years ago gives a wrong signal to developers: possibly we don't actually want to spend time implementing it, and just re-filing a bug report "just because yes it is still not implemented" gives a wrong priority signal. I admit I was pushing too much to a fresh start. Whom ever wants to work on the issue this bugreport is about, probably doesn't need an open bugreport about it. The persoon will need an i386 machine to verify that the i386 image still works fine. And also need an amd64 machine to verify that the i386 image can detect it is on amd64 hardware. Presumably, you could link to the old bug in the new one ;-) Richard

Hi, Holger Wansing <hwansing@mailbox.org> wrote: > > I'm closing the reports below. > > That's installation-reports for Debian 7 with > - undefined errors > - problems which are likely to have been fixed in the meantime > - successful installation > > Because of the age, there is no chance to analyse them further and therefore > they are no longer relevant or of any use for current releases: And thank you for filing these installation bug reports, they have been very useful at the time they were filed! If you know, that the issue you reported (and gets closed here) is still existing in recent installation images, please file a new report for that! round 7 (some reports I overlooked recently): https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=731720 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=739986 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=751973 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=759606 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=782798 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=784751 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=795507 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=798282 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=841236 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=865032 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=865562 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=962701 -- Holger Wansing <hwansing@mailbox.org> PGP-Fingerprint: 496A C6E8 1442 4B34 8508 3529 59F1 87CA 156E B076
