Package: hw-probe Severity: wishlist It would be interesting for the Debian Installer to have opt-in support for doing a one-time upload of hardware information using hw-probe. I envision this working in a similar way to popularity-contest. The d-i pkgsel udeb would add a script to install hw-probe, which would then ask for participation in postinst. If permission is given then hw-probe is run in save+upload mode, saving the probe to the d-i log dir. Then pkgsel will purge the hw-probe package if the probe has not been saved. I suggest using this path to the probe file: /var/log/installer/hw-probe -- bye, pabs https://wiki.debian.org/PaulWise

I agree that this would be useful Should such probe use the default settings, or perhaps avoid the system logs and only send hardware information? Looking at the boot log, I see the host name and LVM volume names being included. I suspect it is best to avoid submitting such information in the default setup. Perhaps 'hw-probe -probe -upload' is a good setup to use for install time reporting? -- Happy hacking Petter Reinholdtsen

I haven't checked what information hw-probe submits, but it definitely should not include hostname and LVM volume names, regardless of when the submission happens. IIRC it removes serial numbers so it should also be removing other private information. > Perhaps 'hw-probe -probe -upload' is a good setup to use for install > time reporting? That is what I propose indeed, but we should review it first. -- bye, pabs https://wiki.debian.org/PaulWise
