Perhaps do a check and die with an error message if not able to write.

No directory, logging in with HOME=/
nobody@jidanni2:/$ fbreader
loading /usr/lib/zlibrary/ui/zlui-qt4.so
SQLITE IMPLEMENTATION ERROR: (14) unable to open database file
Segmentation fault

Seen before long when moving the mouse around the toolbar.

nobody@jidanni2:/$ HOME=/tmp fbreader
avoids it.
