Aspetta, quello è dovrebbe collegameno EARN<->BITNET, mentre quello

"An ARPA link has been established to Pisa. A copy of the Wisconsin
gateway software is running at Pisa and a service to EARN users will be
established as soon as tests are complete."

C'è diversa roba interessante in quella pagina.

Traffic may well take this route or that depending on circumstances. It
may be James's view of what is wrong but he doesn't have to operate the
network and had only partial knowledge of what goes on. Any way, it is
history and the network is continually changing to meet requirements.
For example, a satellite link between Montpelier and the states is going
in, the Rome/CUNY line has been relocated to Pisa, and so on.

Roma - CUNY):

The high-speed link Montpellier - New York is on order and expected for
March 1987, it will be driven by SDLC protocols. The following changes
in topology were proposed:

Pisa-Montpellier and drop of the redundant link Pisa-CERN
    RAL-Montpellier instead of RAL-CERN

computing.org.uk/ccd/networking/bryant/earn_exec/87EXEC1.htm

e questo fino all'ottobre stesso anno:

http://www.chilton-
computing.org.uk/ccd/networking/bryant/earn_exec/87EXEC6.htm

9.2 It was agreed that the link PISA-CUNY should be cancelled
9.3 [...] The topology agreed by the Executive is as follows:-
Finland, Norway and Iceland to Sweden
Sweden to Denmark
Denmark to Netherlands
Dublin to UK
Turkey, Israel, Greece, Ivory Coast, Spain, Italy, to France
(Montpellier)
Belgium to France (Paris)
Austria to Switzerland
Germany to France (Montpellier - 64K)
Netherlands to UK to France (Montpellier) to Switzerland to
Netherlands (a group of four lines).

"Philip Overy is now using a large percentage of his time on EARN user
support. Most problems are with mail and concern traversing gateways
outside of the UK. In particular the gateways in the USA are numerous
and documentation is sparse. The gateway of greatest concern is the
Wisconsin ARPA gateway but the introduction of the gateway at Pisa may
alleviate the problems"

Occorre fare un passo indietro, ai "first day of EARN":

La situazione al 1984 era questa:

Italy
The only line activated is the line Rome to Cuny; the other lines
are physically here and may be activated any time.
Internal networks includes lines between Roma Scientific Center and
Bari, Roma, Pisa (CNUCE), Bologna.
As soon as connections are activated, a certain number of nodes will
be activated.
The nodes pertaining to CNUCE are of two different kinds:
Universities (like Palermo, Frascati, Firenze, Milano, Torino) and
Institutes which belong to CNR (National Council for Research).

computing.org.uk/ccd/networking/bryant/earn_bod/84BOD2.htm

verso ARPAnet.

http://www.chilton-
computing.org.uk/ccd/networking/bryant/earn_bod/85BOD2.htm

qui c'è una nota curiosa:

Stefano Trumpy stated that EARN cannot use the Italian gateway to
ARPANET because UK is formally opposing any european non-Italian
traffic.
