Curtis Windom Executed In Florida, Marking A Record-Setting Year For State

Curtis Windom, a 59-year-old death row inmate, was executed by lethal 
injection Thursday at Florida State Prison, becoming the 11th person put 
to death in the state this year. The execution, which marks a modern-era 
record for Florida, proceeded despite public pleas from Windom’s own 
children and relatives of at least one of his victims, who had forgiven 
him and asked the state to spare his life.

Windom was pronounced dead at 6:17 p.m. EDT. His execution is the 30th in 
the U.S. this year, driven largely by Florida’s accelerating pace.

Windom’s children and members of the victims’ families had spoken out, 
urging Florida officials to halt the execution. They said the state was 
ignoring their voices and had conducted a rushed and incomplete clemency 
process.

“We’ve already lived through the horror of that day, and we’ve spent the 
last 33 years trying to heal,” said Windom’s daughter, Curtisia Windom, 
ahead of the execution. “I have forgiven my father. My brothers have 
forgiven my father. We’ve reached a place of peace with him after years of 
pain. Killing him now will not bring anyone back—it will only reopen deep 
wounds and take away the closure we’ve worked so hard to find.”

Windom was convicted in 1992 of killing three people in a shooting rampage 
in Winter Garden, part of metro Orlando. He was found guilty of murdering 
Johnnie Lee, his girlfriend Valerie Davis, and Davis’s mother, Mary Lubin. 
He was also convicted of attempting to kill Kenneth Williams.

The families’ pleas for mercy were disregarded, as Governor Ron DeSantis 
had signed the death warrant on Tuesday. All of Windom’s post-conviction 
appeals in both state and federal courts had been denied.
