Hello beloved group members,

Just in case you haven't heard yet: Helios, the wonderful UNIX-like OS for Transputers (and other CPUs) is back!
Working on it the last year on-and-off I pleased to announce the availability of the Helios source code.

After some huffing and puffing, cursing and hacking it now compiles in its natural habitat, Solaris that is.
I took the freedom to call this phase "Sköll" (Norse mythology, One of the wolves hunting the Sun... Sun, Helios, Perihelion... you get the gist ;-)).

This is just a start. Next up is "Hati" (the other wolf, hunting the moon) which means cross-compiling Helios on e.g. Linux - or any other modern OS. When that's done - and we have a broader platform for other developers lacking a SUN box - there are many ways to proceed:
- add more (modern) features
- support more hardware
- support more and/or modern CPU architectures (ARM is already there... ARM7xx though. Not ARMv7!)

Read more details on
   http://www.geekdot.com/helios-ng.html

All Sources are available at github
   https://github.com/axelmuhr/Helios-NG

...and yes, Tim King himself gave me the ok to "do whatever I want" with the sources. Well, get them while they're hot... and they're GPL'ed by the way.

Cheers, Axel

That sounds really great - as I am still using Transputers and
a SUN SS20 for hobby projects this is excellent news! Surely I
will try to compile the original on my gear in the upcoming
weeks!

Well let's see where the route will lead us! Hopefully the
plus of developers and new, modern hardware will not lead to
a huge amount of new dependencies which will prevent the upcoming
versions from running on the nice SUN or other "original"
hardware...

Thanks for your efforts which are highly appreciated!

       Erik.
