Hi,

I'm ForeverRent from Texas and I hate rubbish like the C64 or the English
doorstopper Sinclair Spectrum.

Why don't you throw away that old crap and buy a PC, Mac or iPad?

Only idiots are using 30yo old computers in 2012!

Old computers should be used for recycling for making even more PCs, Macs
and iPads!

It depends...

You should tell that to car-oldtimer enthusiasts. Some of them are
having cars which haven't been brought to their intended purpose
(driving a car) for 50 years and more. Selling/and buying that kind of
vehicles in auctions for millions of pounds sterling.....

You have no clue.
Let the people have their fun with oldtimers (of any kind)....

I like to have a game or two with an old classic computer. Which is far
more intention, bringing back that crap to its intended purpose, than
that, what some car-oldtimer enthusiasts are doing.
Well, the main of the car-oldtimer enthusiasts are also using their old
stuff from time to time, IMO. That's it!

I have a PC, Mac and an IPad but the C64 is still the most fun. The
golden years of home computing simply can not be matched by anything
today. Too bad the younger generations will probably never appreciate
on just what they missed out on.

That's a well-worn platitude. No one is ever going to "appreciate" what
an earlier generation experienced unless he/she becomes a student of
history. You want experience? Just ask those (who are still alive and
lucid) who were around during the Great Depression and WWII (as were my
parents). Gates/Allen and Jobs/Wozniak did not start their companies by
monkeying around on VIC-20s and C-64s. But their software/hardware
found its way into businesses as well as homes. More recently the
founders of Google started their operation also in a garage.

My first C-64 (I have 3 in working order) set me back $495 in 1983. Now
look what you can get for that same amount (not even adjusted for
inflation). And if you want to experiment with hardware and software on
currently-available platforms at home there's a wealth of stuff for
that, a lot of which is free. (Nuts & Volts mag is a great source for
computer projects IMHO). Looking back is nice but I don't want to
remain there. 'Nuff said. Sincerely,

Well said. While I still look back to the C64 with fondness ( In fact,
I often listen to C64 remixes while at work), I have long since moved on.

That can be said by any "generation." When I was nine I was playing
with my C64. Adults at the time could have easily said the same thing
about building their kit computers -- after all, where was the fun in
not having to solder your stuff together after you bought it?

I still keep a real C64 set up in my office. My pre-teen son thinks
it's cool and likes to play with old computers and electronics from
time to time. But I don't expect him to "appreciate" it the same way
I do.

I realize my continued interest in those items is mere nostalgia. I
can joke about having to type Load "*",8,1 and having to wait five
minutes for my game to load, but how do you make a legitimate case
that it is "better?"

Because you can possibly understand all of it. There is no modern
entertainment applicance (cough computer cough) that you can understand, nor
can you understand all of Linux, Windows etc.
