with Italian spam, I see. Why does the spammer bother, since we're not remotely likely to be interested?

And why doesn't Google do something? Or perhaps they don't give a sh- er, monkeys.

I've not seen any for a while now so it must be being eaten by a filter
upstream (I use eternal-september).
Last time Google "did something" it was to block c.s.s entirely making
the archive inaccessible on Google Groups, so it's probably better that
they leave well alone!

Yes ineptitude abounds and It would not surprise me to see them shut all
groups off but their own soon in any case.

Why should they? Feel free to look up the X-Complaints-To: header of the

Totally agree! I've just landed on the group, finally after 32 years tinkering with Sinclair computers.

Don't hesitate to report back the content to Google through the web access of this group if you like: access/select the message, go to the rightmost icon and select 'Report Abuse'. If we don't report back, the group will continue to be swamped with the same content from time to time.

Cheers!!

I assume that's what somebody did last time. The result was losing
access to the archive until we moaned at them until they re-instated it.

I suspect no-one at Google has any understanding of Usenet groups and an
automated system will just end up banning the group again.

I'm not sure what you mean. Why should anyone need Google to read
newsgroups? There is a ton of free NNTP servers out there and if you can
afford ten bucks, hop over to news.individual.net and subscribe to the
probably best server out there. News clients exist for even the most
exotic OSes. You could even write your own for the Speccy, the NNTP
protocol is pretty trivial (https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3977) or hack
the commands into Putty. OK, NNTPS aside, manually fiddling with certs is
a pain.

On a sidenote: I don't filter/killfile posts originating from Google Groups
- that would be something like

# Google Groups
!delete Message-ID: {^<[\w\.-]+@[\w\.-]*googlegroups\.com>}
!delete,ignore From {<\w+\.\w+@googlemail\.com>$}

, but didn't see the Italien spam Robert complained about either. So let's
see what the culprit is by deactivating all filters and sampling the last
3k posts from comp.sys.sinclair. Et voilĂ , what do we have here...:

Complaints-To: groups-abuse@google.com
Message-ID: <04130591-2a4a-4f43-b399-8a64adf305d5@googlegroups.com>

NOTO PEDOFILO FEDERICO IZZI DI ROMA (NOTO COME "ER ZIO ROMOLO" INCULA

Seems like the all-caps-filter

# Filter all-caps subjects (4 and more capitals in a row)
!delete Subject {(?-i)^[^a-z]{4,}$}

has caught it. So: Update your filters, move on. Problem solved.

So you trust a company that earns most of its money with data mining and
spying on user behaviour who - in their terms of service - mention that
they could shut down any feature anytime at their free discretion? No
kidding? Perhaps you also believe that your data is safe "in the cloud".

Remedy: Build your own news archive using a decent newsreader instead of
some obscure NNTP-to-HTTP-service. Unfortunately, news.individual.net only
carries posts back till 2016. Tough luck.

Greets,
Volker

On account of not owning a time machine to go back and create an

That. Deja News was cool. Google, not so much.

It actually makes me doubt *all* of Google's high-minded claims. If
they're *really* about archiving human knowledge and making it
searchable, why have they let the Usenet archive they spent a fortune
on back in 2001 atrophy? Even basic searches don't work properly. I
thought searching was what Google... y'know, *does*.

If they don't care about it any more, then how about releasing it into
the public domain? Set up a foundation or donate it to archive.org.
Usenet might not matter much any more, but it was vitally important to
the early Internet. There's a lot of historical value in there
alongside the wibbling about Speccy games and crisps.

Blimey, that's a bit drastic. But if it works...

I haven't seen any of it for a long while either. Aioe.org's spam
filter has always been bloody good. (As has their service generally,
actually. It must be nearly 15 years since I signed up, and I've never
had a single problem. In fact, I even had to go and check the name, and
that I was still using it. The website certainly didn't look that
clean and shiny last time I visited.)

I see the occasional post (last one from 09/11 - no, not that 09/11 if
there are any Americans in), the previous one 19/10, everything else
has expired off my local list.

I'm just using VM's news server, which I recall changed (or was
outsourced or something) some time ago. As in, some time in the last
ten years. Can't remember when. I wonder how much use it gets?
Suppose I'm lucky they didn't just turn it off and not provide a
replacement. Not that I use it much. Pop into c.s.s once or twice in
a blue moon and that's it. Can't even be bothered to set it up on a
different computer, still using the ancient version of Microdot-II
whose config has been copied from place to place, and have to power up
the Amiga to get on it.

Chris

Because Google values "free-speech" or something, I've always been told.

That said what with Article 13, and the Facebook scandal(s), it wouldn't suprise me if Big Tech is going to have start cleaning up it's act fairly soon, before governments implement all kinds of draconian measures to 'clean up the internet for normal decent citizens.'
