Looks definitely interesting. Although, WRT playing text adventures, I'm
going to wait and see whether their reply below changes into something
more concrete :)

From the FAQ:

"Q - Can I connect a keyboard?

A - We're reviewing our expansion options."

Unfortunately they also said that about the ZX Spectrum Vega, and AFAIK you can't connect a keyboard to that either.

And it would probably have made more sense on the original Vega, because
you had to plug that into an external display anyway.

The big selling point of the Plus is that it's a handheld with a small
built-in screen, and I can't really imagine many people wanting to play
text adventures on it. Far better just to run an emulator on your laptop.

True. Hence I don't have too high hopes on the matter.

Yeah, that's my preferred method too. Still, the feature would probably
make Vega+ a deal maker for me.

I too would like to be able to connect a keyboard. Maybe the
microUSB-port could have USB OTG or the Vega+ could have Bluetooth
compatible with http://sinclair.recreatedzxspectrum.com/. I don't think
this will happen because enough people are buying it anyway.

One wonders if its a hardware issue, ie, they don't want to put a socket on,
or if its going to need a software rewrite. i don't know enough about it to
know if basic is there or not, if not then what is the point. I'd have to
say that some games do use basic routines so I'd have to assume those might
be there as they were in the old Sam emulation that did not actually have a
basic.

It's an emulator running directly on an ARM SoC so it would need a firmware update to support an external keyboard.

> i don't know enough about it to know if basic is there or not

It's there, although there's no menu entry for it. Retro Computers licensed the ROMs from BSkyB along with the Sinclair, ZX, and Spectrum trademarks.

I saw this article the other day, and I have to say it's very exciting. I
currently use a Nintendo DS with zxds as the emulator, and that works
really well. With the dual screen there is a keyboard map that when used
with the stick makes text adventures, hell even Elite (with a custom
keyboard), very playable.

I held off whith getting a Vega as the majority of the pre-installed games
looked crap. Adding your own games work OK? I never really heard feedback
about that? And the connectivity to a large display seemed to be hardwired
only which looked shit also.

This device will be more geared to the arcade action titles IMO, and I will
get one for that reason alone. I just hope you can declutter the device
with all of the shit titles and install your own, so I can recreate my old
games library that I had back in the day!

Vega+ isn't really going to give you anything over ZXDS, except an actual border.

Adding your own games is pretty simple. Just copy to an SD card and (optionally) create a keymap file for the game.

> I just hope you can declutter the device

If you put an SD card in those titles are shown separately so you can ignore the internal ones. You can also create save games of the internal ones to the SD card, effectively creating a favorites list.

On the subject of adventure games. You can manage without an external keyboard. Just save the following text as a .ZXK keymap file and edit the relevant bits.

# Change this to the name of your filename:
