All Atari computers were crap. That's why those with brains had
Commodore computers instead, and those with brains and money had Apple
computers.

Of course, at least Atari had computers. Sinclair's toys were much,
much worse piles of absolute elephant dung.

I consider the ZX Spectrum ROM availability and community as a huge asset. I wish the Atari ROMs were nearly as available as the ZX Spectrum.

That's one area that I wish Atari could compete. Unfortunately it seems the current Atari is more of a trademark-and-intellectual-property-holding company than anything.

I was lucky enough to have both a speccy and an 800XL back in the
day. The 800XL was a really good machine. 'Twas let down in the UK
by the lack of software. ISTR that in the UK, Mastertronic was one
of the only vendors producing software for it. It's multitude of
graphics mode, display lists, and 256 colour pallette made it quite
an advanced machine. It could easily keep up the C64 in terms of
graphics capability. It's Player/Missile system (poor man's sprites)
was plain weird. Not as advanced as the C64, though, to be fair,
it pre-dated the C64. Sound was as good as any other home machine
of the day (4 channels) though the C64 ruled over everything back
then. I enjoyed hacking on that machine, learning about it's 
hardware. Proper DOS system when you added disk drives. Good
machine. The Speccy, as much as I loved it, was a games machine.
And a bloody good one, too.

Ah... those were the days. Thanks for the memories :-)

Hello Mr Troll. I have one just here, its actually not bad, but the basic is 
a bit crap.
 Other than that it was miles ahead of its time when it came out.
