#232 — Sinclair ZX81 ZXPand Interfaces Now Available

We are pleased to announce the launch of the ZXpand Interface for the
Sinclair ZX81 Home Computer.

The ZXpand interface is a brand new interface for the Sinclair ZX81
Home Computer which provides the following facilities:

• SD Memory Card reader - for instant loading from / saving to .p
files (used by ZX81 emulators)

• 32K of configurable RAM memory, which can then be set up to use the
various hi-resolution graphics schemes for the Sinclair ZX81

• New keywords are added to the system ROM to allow you to load and
save programs, produce a catalogue of files on the memory card,
configure the ZXpand Interface, and delete files.

• You can still load programs from cassette as well as using the
interface, to allow you to copy files onto the SD memory card

• Sub-directories are supported on the memory card.

• The new ROM can be switched off once a program is loaded for full
compatability.

• There is a built in reset button to reset the ZX81 without having to
pull the power lead.

• You can connect a 9 pin joystick socket to enable you to use it with
specially written games, or converted games, such as the latest game,
'Nanako in Classic Japanese Monster Castle '81' by the Mojon Twins.

• We are working on a daughterboard which will plug into the ZXpand
and provide an AY sound card!

The current version of the ZXPand EPROM is v3 - we are still working
on v4, which main feature is for instant start-up of the ZXpand.  If
you have an EPROM programmer, we can supply the upgrade files as they
are released, or else can offer an upgrade service for a small fee (£5
plus postage)

I must point to you, about your site:

1) the Speccy page redirect automatically to the webring, and I suspect 
is not only a HTML programming error (in this moment, Firefox has 
crashed...)

2) on adventures page, the sidebar links don't work. I can browse the 
sidebar, but there's no linking to the pages about the adventures.

3) a cordial advicing: malinche has a very low esteem in the IF 
community (that is, the still active scene of adventurers and writers of 
text adventures) so I take the liberty of suggesting you to remove the 
link to his site from your text adventures/IF page

Thanks for the feedback - no idea what has happened with the webring,
as that code has always worked for the past 5 years!  I have now
removed the webring code.

Odd about the adventures - it works here in Firefox, Opera and IE 9 -
it is java based which I presume you have enabled?

If it was from webring.com, I just found the other day that a long-forgotten 
link to one of their webrings was hijacking my site too, redirecting 
visitors to a ring that was full of dead sites. Seems they're using 
javascript to steal traffic.

Just a note to say, I ordered one of these, and it is the single greatest 
thing that EVER happend to the Timex/Sinclair 1000 !!
    I'm already dreaming up new ways to use the "Hard drive"  maybe the

Sorry to tell you, but a BBS had (past perfect) already been acitve for 
some years by German ZX-TEAM-member Gernot in the pre-internet-times.
It was running on ZX81 with 32K-RAM, PIO, 1k2 Modem and two floppy drives.
When Gernot left ZX-TEAM, he stopped the BBS.

I ran a speccy-based BBS for a short time. Storage was on 3 microdrives 
and communication was via a modified VTX5000 modem to give 75/1200 baud 
(IIRC - I still have it!). It used a system of Prestel-style graphics, 
edited wholly on the speccy.

That would be Micron bbs software.  I dabbled with it for a while and 
then use a QL for a scrolling BBS system for many years.

I was not aware of that.  Is there any version of the software he wrote and 
used avalible on the web?


A bbs on a spectrum is no large feat, but on a zx-81, well thats been my 
holy grail for the last 5 years or so. I've  actualy started making one 
this week. The ZXpander has just what is needed to make it happen.

  I never had any of the early 80's disk systems for the zx81 like the 
larken, or microdrives, so I had tried to make a BBS that would operate 
entirely in the 64K memory expansion I had. it proved to be to much for me 
to pin down.

Sorry, but no. Since Gernot left ZX-TEAM some years ago, we are not able 
to contact him. We do not even know why he left ZX-TEAM.

ZX-TEAM-floppy drives have never been compatible with the american 
larken or other drives. The first version used a single sided, single 
density drive with about 160k. It was expanded up to ds/dd with 720k, 
but now most friends use USB memory insted of floppy or hard drives.

We ran a mostly BASIC structure BBS on a Timex 2068 for 1-1/2 years back 
in the midlate 1980's, the only bit of machine code was to fetch and 
receive data from the modem. It also trapped a lot of extranious codes 
so that anyone trying to crash the BBS would fail, mainly only accepting 
valid ASCII codes for the printable charactor set.  We had a lot of the 
common BBS features for the 1980's.
  I can not recall anything in the basic that would prevent it from 
running on a ZX-81 to TS-1000 with maybe only a minor bit of program 
conversions.
Some of the various elements in it were kept on the mass storage 
(floppy) and merged in as needed.
One thing the TS2068 allowed me to program was a fairly decent clock 
routine so we could have date and time stamped messages left in the BBS.

I think there is some documentation stored far deep in my pile of packed 
away stuff still.
