#186 — Speccy video recording

OK, so I got ZXSP to record ZX81 games, but it only records as a GIF and 
that's no good for Speccy games.

I know Spectaculator can record AVIs, but that's not free, so is there 
anything else that will?

Spin seems to, but crashes with DLL errors (using Win7 64bit) when I try. 
Help with this issue too/instead appreciated!

Oh, or an RZX-to-video convertor?

I use RealSpectrum under WINE whenever I want to record AVIs - like you I 
found SPIN unusable. Not sure if RealSpectrum runs under Win7-64, but it's 
worth a try (I can send you the files if desired).

Nowadays, as computers are so fast and disk space so vast, I use the frame
dumping feature of FUSE, a good responsive image viewer like gqview to flip
through them all to select portions of footage to use, then some netpbm-
and mencoder-fu to incorporate them into AVIs - but not sure how good the 
Windows equivalent of that toolchain is like.

FUSE is developing this feature, but it's in an early stage:

An alpha version of FUSE for windows is available here:
http://www.fileserve.com/file/rfD6Skx

With FUSE you could transcode the RZX files to FMF files. With fmfconv
(+ffmpeg) you could transcode the FMF files to almost any format.

Thanks both. I should have also asked if anyone knew of a Mac emulator
that did the same thing as that's also a possibility.

worst case scenario
you can faff about with vga cards as i have that have tv encoders on
them and then find that they need tv tuners in the same pc as well and
then that they dont work and that in order to encode video from your
desktop neither the driver nor the tv tuner or tv encoder driver are
much use you need to feed teh tv output fom the vga back into the tv
tuner - you can sometimes get away with feeding it back into the tv
encoder on the same vga but expect a bluscreen teh first time you try
it - also dont expect any webcam software liek messenger yahoo msn
live gmail chat skype icq silverlight flash player to automatically
allow you to use teh two tv ecnoders and the six possible video input
sources i have using a digital tv tuner - dont forget being able to
just use any digital camera with a usb cable - now using the hardaware
tv encoders to boost webcam style performance without having to buy a
usb webcam which when disconnected mo the pc is NOT a digital camera -
also doesnt work mind you getting any manufacturer to allow you to use
hardware you have bought with 64bit xp vista or win7 is a lengthy and
complex process incolving your computer being hacked to pieces by any
company you ask for such drivers if the drivers themselves dont
already crash your comptuer a dozen times as none of them are
validated or sent over a secure network -
i get less than 1% of the advertised connection speed though so far
three has refunded £10 for a couple of months whereas vodaphone
claimed they would allow me to connect for three months for free only
the connection speed was always 85kbps - which would actually have
been usable as my fone modem manages 115200bps  - only they firther
restricted the service and really6 hate customers who complain about
how dreadful their service is apparently i owe them £400 just for
daring to suggest that if i pay for a service i might be entitled to
some of it at some point even if only occassionally

excellently, and works with other emulators and games and all sorts too.
