Hi all,

I'm completely new to the ZX Spectrum and am currently working on a Spectrum-related project for which I have a few technical questions.

What is the current go-to place for this type of discussion? Is it here?

I've tried WorldOfSpectrum but after registering, I still can't post, nor respond to others'. Attempting to email the webmaster via the link crashes. That aside, the forum software in use looks half-baked and, I suspect, a real pig to use - why don't they upgrade to some decent forum software??? Especially since they admit they have issues that are "hard to fix".

The IRC channel appears to be completely dead. The last daily logs are back in 2014. So I can only presume that's long gone?

Are there any other sites/forums/etc? Or is this group _the_ place now?

Regards,

OK, I see I had to be approved before I could post. No mention of that on the site that I could see. Still, my question stands...

The WOS website has gone to the dogs as far as I can see. A real shame.

The site changed owners and switched to a different forum software some
time ago. The transition didn't go too well, to put it mildly. And I
liked the old forum software better. But things seem to be improving, if
slowly. People are still posting.

There's a smaller section at http://www.sinclairzxworld.com/ too.

It sometimes works, the logging doesn't. But since it's not reliable,
it's unlikely to attract a critical mass of chatters for meaningful
conversation.

Because some of the German ZXTEAM (ZX81 club) members wanted to try the
ZX-IRC client, I set up a dedicated IRC server at irc.zxq.de 6667. Login
to common public servers took too long because of the MOTD being too big
for the ZX81 :) The server software is a bit limited, but sufficient
for conversation.

Feel free to use it as a replacement for irc.worldofspectrum.org with
the same channels #general and #technical. But I guess you need to be
very patient for other chatters to show up. A webirc interface is
available at http://webirc.zxq.de/ - defaults to channel #zxteam, change
as appropriate.

The WOS server actually crashed and died which led to an emergency migration to another server well ahead of anything being ready. What you have is partial restoration of the original site which will not see any further functionality restored. Instead WOS 2.0 is being worked on and when that is ready it will replace the partially functioning site.

The forum looks pretty good when one of the stylish scripts made available in the forums is applied. A greasemonkey script fixes some links so that you can, eg, see screenshots when browsing the database.

The WoS IRC server was dead for all practical purposes for years before
it was finally put out of its misery by the old server breaking and
subsequent migration.
For active and on topic irc you are probably best on #zx in
coldfront.net. Full disclosure: I happen to be the owner of that channel :)

This group hasn't been "the place" for a decade... Sad to say the place
with the most activity these are the various fragmented barely usable
facebook groups :(

Fragmentation is a big issue indeed... I'm not even aware of any
Facebook groups.
