I have developed this sudden overwhelming urge to get back to my youth and 
do some ZX81 programming, particularly seeing what I can achieve in the 
light of age and experience on the basic 1K machine. Why I don't know, it's 
like a sudden urge for a lemonade sparkle or something.

Anyway, couple of minor problems. I haven't got a ZX81 any more being the 
primary one. The second is that half the programming tricks I remember are 
confused with Speccy programming tricks, particularly regarding interrput 
service routines and the like. Well hey ho anyway. Looking for some advice, 
firstly I wonder if anyone can recommend a good emulator that is perfect at 
the hardware level regarding the infamous display jiggerypokery; and also if 
there is some kind of "development environment" I can use, since even if I 
had the real thing I think I'd not much want to be loading and saving on 
cassettes.

Really then I'm looking for some kind of assembler I can use then dump the 
bytes into the ZX81 emulator RAM. Not terribly keen on the old hand assembly 
and typing hex into a hexloader programme either. I had more energy for that 
kind of thing when I was 15. Not so much now, being very old.

My head is abuzz with Z80 algorithmic nonsense. Any advice on the above to 
get me started?

I think the best ZX81 emulator around is the EightyOne, but its Windows only. I'm working on a port to libretro, and it already works on Windows and Linux: https://github.com/leiradel/81-libretro

However, I'm not porting any of EightyOne's debugging facilities, the port is good only for running programs.

Thanks, that's the one I've found so far. I'm on Windows, so that is fine.

I knew an Ian Bland from school, in Shrewsbury, Shropshire.
