As some of you will be aware, I've been tinkering with an open source version of SE Basic that could be distributed with hardware without infringing Amstrad's copyright. I'm pleased to say the project is now viable, although it is not yet written. I've also said I would only release it in exchange for a sack of cash. So let me quantify that: I want 100 people to donate a minimum of £10 each to the Red Cross Japan Tsunami Appeal. You can sign up here: http://www.pledgebank.com/opense If you are based in the UK you can make your donation here: http://www.redcross.org.uk/Donate-Now/Make-a-single-donation/Japan-Tsunami-Appeal I know it's called pledgebank but I want you to donate now. This is an honour system. If you say you've donated £10 or more I'll assume you have. Please sign up by July 1st. Thank you. -Andrew P.S. I have donated £10 to get the ball rolling

I'm not having a go at your idea, which seems very honourable, but
just a general question...
Why do the Japanese need money? Don't they have loads of it? And a
fairly well-integrated government and society? I can understand quake
victims in South America needing help, but not Japan.
I've seen these requests all over the place. Can't the Japanese
government pay the Red Cross for their services? They're the second or
third richest country on the planet!
They're also not quite the sort of fuckers who'd leave people to die
and be homeless after a disaster because they're poor, unlike the
United States of certain other countries.

"There's nothing like eating hay when you're faint," the White King remarked to Alice, as he munched away.
"I should think throwing cold water over you would be better," Alice suggested: "--or some sal-volatile."
"I didn't say there was nothing better," the King replied. "I said there was nothing like it."
Which Alice did not venture to deny.
