Sod it, I'll pay the plug tax. Ahem.

After several days of bugfixing and tearing my hair out I've decided to release a version of my latest game, STORMFINCH. It has some issues like framerate and sound, which I may or may not fix in the future.

The bicolour graphics are powered by Einar Saukas's amazing Nirvana engine.

You can download it here:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0ByxiMYbPnlUdWGN2bndsTVNOMW8/view?usp=sharing

You get one life, aim for a high score, the panel arrows at the bottom tell you where the next attack is coming from. The border flashes red when a new attack is coming.

Please feel free to host elsewhere.

Oh a bird related game is it?

So what next?Mutant Emu attack? Maybe Revenge of the Zombie Turkeys?

Herring Gull Refuse Challenge?

Other animal titles could be available.
 Cuts Simulator

Dolphin Drugs bust

The great Parakeet Fruit heist.
Only need green for that one.
How about Spot of the Antarctic?

50 shades of Grey Squirrel?

Heh ta for the suggestions Brian.

The game's not especially bird related as it's set in the year 3025, in which all bird species are extinct. Apart from dunnocks that is, and everyone knows that they're just feathery bastard mice.

Isn't it? An arcade game with multicolour graphics... 30 years ago,
that would have been winning awards left, right, and centre. Even with
one life and no sound.

@Mazzabubi

It's more of a Hi-Score challenge minigame, so having a number of lives doesn't really change much. Every attack wave is randomly selected so you get a different game every time anyway.

Yep Einar saukas is a wizard, I think my jaw drops more from reading his code than seeing the colours rendered!

@Mauricio

Yes it will work on real hardware. The engine detects which model and sets the timings accordingly. In fact I spent most of last Sunday afternoon playing it on my +2 :-)

The only downside is that the ULA is old and doesn't show the graphics as nicely as an emulator.

@Duncan

I'm working on an update with AY music and more attack waves, I'll sort a few playability issues too. I released it too early really, but I'm glad I did because I nearly binned it after days of holiday lost to bugfixing, I'm feeling more motivated now.

As promised, here's the updated version with sound and more 'stuff' in general:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0ByxiMYbPnlUdeXcyYUdYZ2pvaEU/view?usp=sharing

-Banging AY music, thanks to Vortex Tracker and an unknown author I would like the be able to thank properly :-)
-Lots of bugs fixed, I think.
-Key control issues hopefully solved, at least simplified
-Loads more attack waves
-Lots of refinements and polish

Hope you enjoy :-)

Oh! AMAZING GRAPHICS! Too many animation frames! And not too bad playability! 30 years late but it's still an amazing work.

Pure Zx Spectrum porn without foreplay!

Phew! I think I'm near the final version of this.

STORMFINCH LATEST VERSION, download here:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0ByxiMYbPnlUdbTgwX1ZmenFRUE0/view?usp=sharing

9 bosses
10 landscapes
48 attack waves
falling ceilings
9 lives
end of game sequence

This is the first time I've filled the spectrum's memory, so much so that I've had to run intro code from the screen!

Crikey, that's a bit good. I said it before, and it's even more true
now that it's, you know, an actual *game*: back in the '80s, this would
have won awards. 'Course, standing on the shoulders of giants (Oi!
Gerroff! - Giant Ed.) and all that, but still, brilliant job.

By the way could people use this link below, I've changed a few small things, not least a typo on the loading screen. Powerered by Nirvana indeed...

BUG REPORT:

On rare occasions the very final boss can be destroyed but the code doesn't realise so it just keeps rolling with nothing happening.

I might not be able to fix it this week, so if it happens:

1-really really sorry and thanks for playing that far!
2-POKE 46285,0 and you can progress to the end sequence.

A few bugs fixed, and there are now a whopping 64 attack waves. As before 10 levels, 9 bosses, game completed sequence.
