Ben Heck is a cheerful modder and customiser and has turned his attention to the original "iconic" ZX Spectrum.

In Part 1 he tore down the original rubber-keyed model and "got it".
He appreciates it's simplicity and the time it is coming from and said some very complimentary things about the 1982 machine.

Times move on and Ben intends to have a normal keyword entry and is using my 2003 GW03 ROM.
The name is my initials and year. I wanted something less staid and initially thought of "Gee Whiz". However someone had beaten me to it so I settled for "Gosh Wonderful" which amused Ben.

It's looking very promising.
Incidentally the ZX Spectrum and Jupiter Ace use the Z80 which was developed by Zilog. 
The designers called it the "Zee Eighty".

It's Friday and Ben has 17 minutes of soldering and shaping to further his design for a portable "Speccy".

He is sticking to the 40 switch keyboard matrix which he will program with his thumbs - just as I do on my iPad with Spectaculator. If he sticks to the design in Part 1, he can offer a choice of editor.

Next episode will use CAD to design case and laser print the letters and symbols.

Looking good. What makes it easy is the Spectrum's simple memory map.

That's interesting, as a Brit I've always thought of it as a "Zed Eighty" 
and never even twigged that Zilog were an American company!

I wonder if the Americans get as riled up by our pronunciation of "Z80" as 
we Brits seem to do by "Zee Ex Spectrum"? Probably not...

I'm pleased to see the Gosh Wonderful ROM in such a nice case.

Some people lead sheltered lives and seemingly never meet Americans or view US people on videos and TV.

I'm blessed that half my family went to upstate New York and California a while back and I spent the best part of a year programming over there. 
No culture shock. I was already aware that I drove on the wrong side of the road :-)

Well to tidy up and complete this thread here is Ben Heck's ZX Spectrum Mod Part 3

The Ben Heck Show has 15 million viewers around the world and is shown on several venues apart from YouTube

Since the show Ben has flown from Chicago to Leeds - where Dr. V became a doctor and where Element 14 is headquartered.
He has brought the portable Spectrum and will be showing it off to TV and campers this weekend at Bletchley.

The ROM he is using is an enthusiasts derivative of GW03 unknown to me. The copyright message has been changed and the colour of the loading bars.
Each to his own but I really like the original and have changed as little as possible hence its wide compatibility.

I love messing about in BASIC and playing Ant Attack. The Gosh Wonderful ROM has an NMI routine which can break into protected games.
So if Ben rigs up an NMI switch he can too.

This gif demonstrates how the ROM works with microdrives. Note how the free memory is affected. 
Activating the NMI switch enabled me to break into the program and list Sandy White's BASIC.

I watched them all back-to-back the other day. Great stuff. Good to see
the Speccy being shown to people who probably haven't seen one before,
good to see that someone like Ben appreciates the appeal - "the
Volkswagen of computers"; I like that - and good to see the GW ROM,
even if it's not the "real" one.

But... silver? Someone should tell him he needs to take a spraycan of
black paint to that sucker.

I quite like the silver. I have two Timex models which are both silver.
A colour strip above the numerical keys might be useful but a nice project.

He's just done an interview for the BBC ( Click maybe? ) and he is speaking at EMF at 6:00 pm.
