So I have had a paper letter to BG Services today. When I get some eyes on 
it I will probably respond but as far as I can tell from a dodgy reading of 
it by dodgy tech, the person has found the old Z80 emulator and it 
surprisingly, not will not run on modern machines.
 What is the current best emulator to point him at do you think. I'm not 
able to tell myself for the obvious reason of being blind.

let's me guess: your interest in the Spectrum is because of the large 
collection of adventure games ? (now called Interactive fiction)

if I'm correct, I can assume that your need is an emulator compatible 
with voice readers ?

No its not for me. Its from an ex customer when I used to distribute Z80 
emulator. I know that no emulator can work in the actual screen with access 
tech, as its graphic text.


I have given up on that one. No he has asked for info and I'm not sure he is 
even on line. He merely found the old disc and tried it.
 It says, your computer is too fast and exits!

Which "old Z80 emulator"? Lunter's Z80 emulator? I've got both Z80
and WinZ80 both of which will "run on modern machines".

Would WinZ80 run on 64-bit Windows? That might be the issue.

being too high.

Maybe running the emulator under DOSBOX could solve the issue.
DOSBOX provides a DOS environment giving the choice of adjusting the speed

On the subject of emulators, I usually use WinZ80 but I've
been (trying to) test some others.

Do FUSE, Spectaculator and SPIN actually support loading from
.TAP files with custom ROMs? I've been using my JGH.ROM so I
can use the CAT command to list what's on a tape (and I prefer
one-character entry and white-on-black colour scheme).

FUSE - dies as soon as anything tries to read from tape.

Spectaculator - flashes the border with thin black/white bars
and never reads anything. The "Tape catalog" function lists
the contens of the tape, but the Spectrum never "sees" any of
it.

Generally speaking emulators switch off tape traps when you supply a 
custom ROM as they assume it's an IF2 ROM. Sometimes you can trick them 
into leaving them switched on by replacing the default ROMs.

'Klive' is making a good figure going with HD Screens. It was always my
favourite Speccy Emulator, but the fullscreen picture going with
HD-crap TV-sets is surprising me (someone behind the software has
thought straightforward, genius coder IMHO).
By the way, Klive makes always a nice picture in fullscreen mode. This
piece of software is more hardware than software to me :). Not that the
Speccy is a frame controlled smooth gfx arcade machine, but Klive makes
sense, to emulate the speccy as best as it can and it has other (fuzzy)
features too.
Other emulators do have too much fuzzy features but missing the basics,
or even both of them.

Using 'Klive' I would set the (flatscreen) TV to 50Hz, or 100Hz when
using a CRT-Monitor....
E.g.: Set 1920x1080 or 1366x768 (HD Ready) on the TV. Then turn ON
Fullscreen mode with Aperture Grille feature ON in Klive, and enjoy IMO
a masterpiece of emulator software. Mmmmmhh... what a picture, and
smooth as far as possible.
