Hi all

Just wanted to test the water on this.

We're over halfway into this year's CGC and I've been looking at the provenance of the entries, and hardly any, if any, can be described as being from the CSS.

To take into account the varied source of the entries I wonder how you guys would feel if the competition name was to be changed to the 'Sinclair Crap Games Competition' instead?

I still think the host should be obliged to keep CSS and WOS (& possibly some Swedish & Russian speccy forums) up to date, and ensure the CSS origins of the comp are known.

I'm choosing to raise this now because if I do it at the end of the year, next year's host would have to bear the stress if it was an unpopular idea & that's not fair on them.

I've not mentioned this anywhere else so far, keen to know what the CSS thinks first :-)

Cheers

I would prefer the name is kept as is. Assuming I have any say in the
matter, of course.

Hmm, this looks like a tax dodge. Remove CSS from teh name of the
CSSCGC and you're saving, what? 75p and a packet of Rolos? Every time
you plug comp.sys.sinclair elsewhere? (hold on, I think you might have
that the wrong way round; the plug tax is for people plugging other
stuff in CSS, not plugging CSS to other people - Ed) Is it? (Yes - Ed)
Oh.

In seriousness, I'd rather it stayed as the CSSCGC, even if the "CSS"
part no longer meant anything. Everybody knows it as the CSSCGC, and
it's easy to search for. If it starts being the SCGC it immediately
becomes less recognisable, and you're competing on Google against the
might of the Santa Cruz Guitar Company (no, really), and the Sugar
Cane Growers Co-operative (again, really).

It's also a nod to its heritage, even if it becomes the "CSS Crap
Games Compo". Or it could be the "Creative Sinclair Spectrum Crap
Games Compo" or something.

(and the reason there are so few entries from c.s.s is because hardly
anybody visits c.s.s. anymore. I was going to write Theatre Korea - a
Korean Peninsula themed Theatre Europe-alike - but I didn't find
enough motivation and it's no longer topical)

^^^ This. If the CSSCGC can't be nostalgic and ironic about the old
days when more than 4 people used to read usenet then it's all worth
nothing at all. :p

If at least a couple of people want to keep CSS (=comp sys sinclair) that's good enough for me. It's only if the reponse was total indifference I would have pursued it further.

It would be nice if there were more entries from CSS people though :-)

I honestly expected the next word to be "crap" when I first read that.
I thought you were proposing to change it into the CSSGGC or
something (CSS Good Games Compo).

I couldn't possibly agree with that! We've had some 65 entries so far, and although 20 of those could be described as good, they still have some naff elements to them. If I get worried about the baseline quality being too high I just go and have a game of Joystick Hero* and that sets my mind at rest.

If you think the games are too good though it's a good time to get some truly crappy games submitted :-p

*not a euphemism!

Oh, no, I wasn't saying that! It's just sometimes the CGC attracts
entries that are somewhat too good, and I thought (having not checked
out the entries for a while) that maybe you'd had an influx of them.

I enjoy the fact some of the games submitted are actually quite good.
It adds an element of surprise. Crap game, crap game, crap game, crap
game, cr.. woah! What is this?! I would have paid £1.99 for this back
in 1984!

It would be sad to see the name changed - almost like another nail in
CSS's coffin - but I can see your point. I've certainly never done
anything to support it, so can't really complain (it's one of those
things I've always meant to do, but never seem to get round to[1]).

Having said that, I'm surely not the only one who feels that there's
something appropriately crap - and quite funny - about it still being
named after a Usenet group. Your call (in consultation with everyone
else, of course), but I'd bear that in mind.

[1] I think I wrote an entry once, but didn't submit it.[2] Maybe
I'll stumble across it one of these days.

[2] Which is *really* crap and should have won me the prize, in my
    opinion.

I think CSS must be 98% nails and only 2% actual coffin now.

The IRC channel that went on to become #speccy was initially called
#css, on EFFNet. And it was created around the same time something
called cascading style sheets for HTML were invented (they'll never
catch on...). I remember we used to get all manner of silly folk in
that channel who couldn't understand why we kept talking about crisps
and rubbish 8 bit computers instead of "cutting edge" web development
technologies.

It was quite funny.

I will add my voice to the masses - well, the handful - who say keep CSS in
the name. Even though I barely post, haven't participated in the competition

still take to the streets and set things on fire[1] in protest if it

ditto. CSS is not dead no matter how many times people (like the
indisputably crap nickh) keep trying to say it is. OK, I've not submitted a
game for a few years either. I had the odd idea but never got around to
honing it to imperfection.
