His style hasn't changed much, has it? This would be a young,
fresh-faced Clarkson (before he'd even been on Old Top Gear, I think,
and he looks about 12 in some of his earliest appearances), yet you
could easily imagine old, grey-haired, Clarkson off New Top Gear
writing that.

I still like James May best, though. I expect he was writing for Classic
Tractor or Practical Steam Pump Monthly back in '87.

Not sure what the  surprise is supposed to  be.
 I do think that the polarisation of the computer industry these days is a 
shame. Who, I wonder decided that  making a computer that taught folk how to 
write programs was a bad idea?

It's just the evolution of the product. If you think computers are bad, 
look at automobiles. Pop the hood these days and you're confronted with 
a lump of plastic emablzoned with large letters that read "no user 
servicable parts". That doesn't mean drivers wouldn't benefit from a 
basic understanding of the combustion engine.

Did you ever see the C5 at its launch?
 Imagine the scene. Ally Pally park in mid winter, snow on the ground. We 
all trudged up the long hill from the station to find Clive and his white 
wonder almost invisible bogged down in the snow. at one point it nearly 
drove into the lake. there were several of them and the  problem was that it 
was close to the ground and the motor drove only one wheel. the pedals 
seemed to drive the other wheel.
 The reason for this stupid  launch was the bank. they wanted it out and 
earning dosh, but failed to realise that far from being a Christmas hit, the 
launch made it a laughing stock it never recovered from. He should have 
waited or launched it in some tropical paradise instead as a leisure vehicle 
and I think then it would be seen for what it was, a fun vehicle, but hardly 
suited to hard winter weather.
