QLs are larger than Spectrums or ZX81. They also predate the Amiga for
being the first consumer product offering multitasking by months. Still
it was a commercial failure. Probably thanks to the Micro-Drives.

I agree here. Setting followup.

You know you are a redneck if

Some of these other groups are awfully rude.
I personally feel that the reason the QL was not commercially successful
was it was aimed at no market properly. It looked like a toy, came out with
half its firmware dangling out the back and bugs, had so called business
software. The main screen modes did not make it that good for games, either.
The Microdrives worked well enough, but could not really hold enough data
for it to be taken seriously for much, which meant that just like most
Sinclair machines it needed to have stuff dangling out the back to be of any
use for business use. The keyboard was a bit of a mess, failing too quickly
like the Spectrum plus one did due to poor membrane design.
The processor was 16bit but the cost savings were made by giving it an 8
bit bus making it a bit on the slow side.
I remember back in the day seeing an add on for the Spectrum which had
another z80 and a better display system that plugged into the back of the
speccy, outperform the QL with the correct software, and it ran CP/M
something Amstrad did with the plus 3 of course but they never fixed the
display.
Heck When the Sam came out Prodos, which I funded the dev of, was
effectively CP/M which could knock things into a cocked hat as well, and
for a bit more money, Memotech was very good for this too, though not quite
as fast and with less ram.

So really Sinclair jumped the gun with a half baked project as usual. Having
met the bloke I actually liked him as a person but he was very much
interested in the next project, not the current one.
Arguably his best device was the Z88 portable computer. For what it did and
its robustness it was very economic in my view.
