Insecurity based on perception of personal mediocrity is conducive to
selfish motivations.

Insecurity based on perception of personal mediocrity is realistic. If
there's any possible way to do something stupid, people will find it.

Remember -- if suddenly you have issues with gcc 4.x.x you can always
go back to 4.x-1.x and set your compilation scripts to use that until
you prove out the bug and fix the problem.

The good news about GCC and other open source compilers is:

1. You have a source code tree of all the modifications and
versions and can revert pieces to earlier versions to see if the code
generates successfully -- and then you have the pointer to the bug.

2. You can revert to a different (earlier or later) version to see if this
works. You also can try another compiler (so many to chose from).
Looks like Ubuntu 16.04 comes with support for 4 versons of CLANG and 5 versions
of gcc.

3. gcc can generate the assembler. You can verify it if you speak x86_64
assembler (should this be amd64?)...

-----------FILE HELLO.C----------------
//C hello world example
#include <stdio.h>

int main()
{
  printf("Hello world\n");
  return 0;
}

For the most part, x86_64 and amd64 are the same thing. There are some
minor (not generally[*] application visible) differences in the privileged MSRs
and the hypervisor interfaces are completely different.

Note the interesting optimization that the compiler generated below -
it scanned the format string for the printf(3), noted there were no
formatting parameters, and converted it to a call to the more efficient puts(3).

[*] Transactional memory support is only on Intel at this point IIRC.

Yeah, I saw that. Bit naughty really.

Truth welcomes investigation because truth knows investigation will lead

It will give you surprisingly little.

The vast bulk of compiler bugs today are either in the lexing/parsing,
and these will normally reject valid code; or they are in the optimisation.

gcc has more than 180 different optimisations, almost all of which
can be turned on or off at will. They are grouped into 0, 1, 2, g, and s;
where 0 is (almost) all off, 1 low level optimisation, 2 pretty aggressive,
g debug-compatible, and s optimize for space.

And there are so much source code out there that the compilers are
tested on; they are pushed through huge tests just there.

And I haven't been bitten by a compiler bug in decades.

Really?!! I wonder if that's because there's one kind CPU in the

	There are actually quite a lot of them, they come in a small number
of families but there is quite a gap between the lowest powered Atom
designed for use in tablets and the biggest, fastest, multi-core-with-added
-sauce-never-mind-the -power-consumption CPUs designed for gamers (or the
similar but different ones for servers) - they all pick from the same
grab bag of features with a common core but there is a lot of room for
variations. Compiling to the common core should ensure code that works
correctly across everything - but paying attention to the differences,
especially the optional features, can make vast performance differences.

	I think the main reason is that the regression test suites for
compilers have become very deep and wide (and keep getting more so), and the
resources are easily available to run them all on every build. By now this
will force most bugs that escape them to be in new features, sane people
give the compilers a while to stabilise before jumping on the latest
language features for this reason.

So there is a "one-kind" list of featureswhich is the base of CPU design.

Ah! I'd forgotten about tests. In the old days, we had the Navy
tests which kept manufactureres "honest". These tests are
available to everyone with network access?

They ship with the source code for the GCC compiler suite.

GCC is now doing more than just C and C++. There's now a Gnu Cobol out there
and a FreePascal. Much of this was built on top of some of the parts of GCC.

And in my current Ubuntu 16.04 they include Open-Cobol, FreePascal, and the GNAT Ada 95 compiler... so

c, c++, Pascal, Ada, Cobol, Assembler, Tcl and TK, various shells including
bash, sh, ksh, zsh, csh, tcsh...

All in all a pretty good free collection of goodies.

The hardware (old T61 dual core laptop) cost me $30 + 25 for the disk drive...
and would've had more room if I didn't set it to dual boot with Win10 as a trial
run on Win10.

I'm going to install FreeBSD and check out zfs mirroring with a pair of drives
next.

The only thing required is high speed internet for the downloads (which
can usually be done at a library for wifi... if I wasn't on Fios here.

Time someone added a full function BASIC.

As well as a teaching tool BASIC is useful for debugging algorithms.

Full function includes MAT instructions, BCD variables, disk handling,
print formatting and sophisticated string handling. Compiled BASIC can
CALL libraries written in other languages.

Well, its better than RPG I suppose, and a bit easier to read than FORTH.

I wouldn't ever teach somebody the program with such an unstructured
language. Python is a better initial teaching tool and can probably do
anything to BASIC can, and my preferred languages for sorting out an
algorithm are C and Java.

But of course ymmv.

BASIC is ok to start people coding and for very simple jobs.

Canada is all right really, though not for the whole weekend.
