And that is basically exactly what Kernighan and Ritchie did, when they took MULTICS and turned it into UNIX. 20 years on, embroiled in legal bollox, Linus took it, and started with a clean sheet, keeping what was good, and getting rid of what was either someone else's claimed property, or what didn't work. > > /BAH > -- If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State. This is just a tiny slice of the big picture, there are many others equally complex. For kids today it is far more useful to learn how things of this complexity are designed and optimised (hint it's not done by one genius holding the big picture in his head) and how those techniques can be extended and improved for the ever more complex systems they will be designing. One part of that lesson is using complex computers as programmable components to achieve robust complex system behaviours. Arduinos are good for this, Pis are better when the behaviour gets really complex. Another part of that lesson is simulation driven design, and automated optimisation. I'm starting to wonder how well a bunch of Pi 0s or similar could run some of the modern deep learning algorithms on a bluetooth connected network. Could make for an interesting approach to robot control. Odds on I'll get nowhere, some PHD student will go two or three steps better while I'm still catching up with the state of the art, but it'll be fun looking around and thinking about it. -- Steve O'Hara-Smith | Directable Mirror Arrays C:>WIN | A better way to focus the sun The computer obeys and wins. | licences available see You lose and Bill collects. | http://www.sohara.org/

Could well have been, although looking at Wikipedia, the PERQ was built from various technologies, starting with AMD bit slice. It originated at CMU. >> Did it? That I can believe! > Later, I remember the DFCs on a 2966 being a single, rather larger, > cabinet. Was the 3 box solution an early version? There were two basic 2900 'generations' (let's not get into the 3900). The first generation was the P-series (about which I know much more). That had a central SMAC (memory) with ports for OCP (processor) and SAC (high level perpheral controller). The SAC had the DFC, the GPC (general peripheral controller (console, tapes, printer, card reader/punch)), and the CLC (comms, 7502 based I think). So yes, the DFC was an early version, although P-series persisted for some years (I stopped working on ours when it was shipped out in 1986). The second generation was the S-series, with a much simplified layout. The controllers were all different, I believe. -- Using UNIX since v6 (1975)... Unreliable and poorly supported. The final straw was when the 'next' version was flagged to be a major 're-engineering' that removed management facilities we deemed essential. We were getting a combined hardware/software MTBF (rolling 13 week average) of just 20 hours. Moving to the home-grown system gave improved facilities, 50% more throughput, and the MTBF rose to about 2000 hours! > but quite liked VME/B once I'd used it long enough to > be able to guess the names of uncommonly used commands (hurray for > naming consistency!). I do, although there were some like that within ICL too. VME/B was just big and inefficient, with pretty terrible facilities for our environment. Originally, we had a single OCP 2960, and it could never have run B anyway. -- Using UNIX since v6 (1975)... Use the BIG mirror service in the UK: http://www.mirrorservice.org

I don't know about that, but the Burroughs mainframes had "tagged memory", each memory word (48 bits) had some extra bits to indicate the type of data stored in that memory location. This was cleverly used all over the system. There was no need for separate instructions for integer or floating point operations, the same add instruction would just operate on whatever data was handed to it (including de-referencing of pointers). Of course, what was most impressive was the sheer size and power consumption of this thing. A system usually consisted of 2 or 3 CPUs, a memory cabinet (6MB), 2 IO processors, all of them housed in cabinets as big as 2 19" racks alongside, plus of course a number of magtape drives and a number of diskdrives containing 2x200 Megabytes of disk storage in each cabinet the size of a washing machine. The system where I worked had about 7GB of disk storage. A CPU cabinet held a large number of parallel powersupplies delivering a total current of about 5000A (about 30kW) to the processor. Compare that to a Raspberry Pi (which has more CPU performance). Stories were told about a worker that had inadvertently shorted the supply rails, hefty copper bars running alongside the cabinet.

The reasons for using a stack architecture mainly were: - easy to write compilers for high-level languages - compact instructions (zero-address) save memory But indeed the performance suffers, especially in simple implementations.
