I believe that there were 6809 and similar chips running Shuttle
software, but the Apollo landers had ferrite core memory in massive-
looking, machined alloy chassis. I was working in NYC during 1976 and one
of the fun things to do every so often was to take a walk past the IBM
building on 6th Ave and see what was in the display windows. At one point
Apollo Lander computer was in the window. They put a lot of interesting
stuff there: one the entire window was filled with every type and version
of memory they'd ever used and on another they displayed every model of
disk drive starting from RAMAC.

One of the reasons I never bothered with them till the 80s'
Too expensive.
Too slow.

I was analogue hardware.

PDP-8 and many others of the same generation (HP 2114/2116,
Honeywell DDP 112, DDP 316, DDP 516 and others) stored the
subroutine return address into the first word of the subroutine.
The first subroutine instruction was in the next word. The
return from the subroutine was done with an indirect jump
via the link location.

There was a pair of stack handling subroutines for PDP-8,
about a dozen instructions each.

That must have been fun when writing recursive subroutines or
re-entrant code (e.g. calling subroutines from interrupt handlers)...

My first experience studying the architecture of a larger system
was with the Burroughs B7700. This system was completely stack
oriented, with display registers for algol compatible variable scope.

It was! In those days I didn't have access to a PDP-8 (I do now) but I
did a lot of work on a DDP-516 (including modifying the CPU). In
particular, I ported a strange, heavily recursive program onto it.

I saw various larger systems: Elliott 4130, ICT 1900, and PDP-10. The ICL
2900 was my first real stack based machine.

I never used the Burroughs 700 series, but I worked with a woman who did.
Its been a long time, but IIRC she said that when you started a program
MCP spun up a virtual machine to suit it, so Algol 60 programs ran in a
stack-based VM with memory organised in words, while COBOL programs got
byte-addressed memory and a simpler stack, possibly holding little more
than subroutine return addressses, and, for all I know, using BCD
arithmetic rather than integers: that would certainly map nicely onto the
way COBOL defines storage for numeric data.

The ICL 2900 was also my first large stack-based system, but I'd already
got used to the stack-based life with 6800-based microcomputers before I
saw a 2900.

The Harris chips (used much later, e.g. in the DECmate) did have some
stack instructions (PPC, PAC, POP, RTN etc.)

My Data General Nova 1200 was the same. Store the return address in the
first word of the subroutine. This was a perfect system as there was no
ROM, only core in those days. The ravages of time means I no longer can
remember the Octal for the bootloader. I used to be able to toggle it in
without thinking.

You must have a memory drop - the Nova architecture put
return address into register 3, which was the other register
able to be used with indexing (the other was register 2).

Not quite. The Nova JSR instruction moved PC to AC3 ... Non-skip return
was JMP 0,3

The Nova-3 added stack and frame pointers.

As I said, I can't remember the bootloader anymore and I toggled it in
"many" times! :-) Yes, it was stashed in AC3 and then you'd do a "sta
3,myret" in the code with myret being at the *END* of the routine if you
needed AC3 in the code. Then you'd return with "jmp @myret" ISTR.

I thought I still had some manuals and tapes but they had been lost
before I last moved house 16 years back. I forgot I'd looked for them so
I could donate them to a museum. It all starts to come back to me now.
Well it's 33 years since I last used one. One for those people who study
how memory (human) works... if I sat at the front panel and was given
the first few words of the bootloader, would it come back to me?

You need self modifying code to access array elements when the CPU does
not support index registers. Index registers have been a standard part
of computers for a very long time.

I think all processors have had the ability to load the contents of what
a register points to.

THat is what a program counter or stack pointer does.
