I think that about the only time I *had* to use assembler due to specific HLL limitations was when I needed a TP monitor for an ICL 2903 that could handle application-specific code written in COBOL. The problem was that version of COBOL would only accept a string literal as the name of the called module. As a result I wrote a minimal TP-monitor in PLAN 3 while pushing as much code as possible over the wall to COBOL. -- martin@ | Martin Gregorie gregorie. | Essex, UK org |

The monitor (kernal) was the best hardware diagnostic. Amen to that! Assembler is the only tool for "do EXACTLY WHAT I SAY, do not second-guess-me!", even if it requires reinforcement like EIEIO (do NOT dynamically optimize me!) I remember the culture shock around 1990 when learning how to transition from CISC to RISC as a programmer and engineer. I had to "trust the compiler" even for assembler to handle things like filling delay branches and other pipeline issues. I fear it is also used to hide errata like instructions that don't really work by silently substituting workarounds. Semi related: a clever fellow repairing an old Univac built an Arduino nano inside the metal connector to generate test patterns for the console's parallel interface. That's a leap of several generations of technology: a System-on-chip talking to a 2nd generation discrete transistor machine! >Really there is no need for assembler unless the language you are using >doesn't have the right constructs to access the hardware explicitly. An inline .asm is rather close to a language or compiler extension, allowing use of things like instructions for which there is no C syntax. I remember being given a magic inline .asm for a serial device driver on the Sun Sparc 4m to force the buffer to flush to the interface chip. > On some simple chips of course it does give predictable timings, > but not with modern cached and pipelined code. Dynamic exploitation of parallelism is a strange and wondrous thing :-)

It was, before the days of microcode pipelines and caches. It is deception that uses all the other techniques.

Do you? That method gives you consistency which can be more important than correctness. If you encounter a bug in the compiler but cannot get that bug fixed, you need to be able to implement a workaround which will work even if the compiler bug is fixed. I don't see how you can ensure your code will work without knowing machine language. Using another compiler may solve the problem but then your product is tied to a particular implmentation of the language. I don't see how you can ensure that the "users" of the program you are writing will use a particular rendition of the language. I'd be very nervous not knowing what machine code was generated. But I am an auld fart who hasn't done any real work in computers for decades. /BAH

So you rewrite the code till it works I've worked with highly imperfect 8 bit compilers back in the day. Often they didn't understand or made a hash of complex constructions. So I gave them simpler ones: If switch()..case: didn't work, if then elseif then elseif generally did...;-) > >> >>> Using another compiler may solve the problem but then your product >>> is tied to a particular implementation of the language. Well what about chip designers or chip microcoders? The world is full of single point failures. If CO2 levels in the atmosphere fell by a factor of 3, nearly all plant life on earth would struggle to survive. (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1469-8137.2010.03441.x/pdf Its a damn good thing renewable energy is totally useless at reducing CO2.) The Sun is a single point of failure too. I use Linux with gcc and FreeBSD with clang/llvm for my projects, and run them pretty much in parallell. That is two separate OSes, cusps, compilers. The only SPOF in the setup is emacs. :-> I run the same regression tests on both sides. And I haven't run into compiler issues that can be classified as bugs on production grade systems since 1994. But I still want to make sure. And you could run a third with a commercial unix system. We are well beyond any one person having control of the whole toolchain. You must trust the toolchain builders, but also verify. -- mrr
