JOBMAX was 50, IIRC. Pink scheduling would start to happen when
about 30 users were hammering the system. This was 4S72 and
not Level D file system (a pre-quel to TOPS-10).

We bought their BASIC and used it for the first training course
where kids learned how to use the computer more than how to
program. Before that, FORTRAN II on the 1620 was used to
train kids how to use the gear and get exposure to fundamentals
of programming.

I once worked on a HP 2000 minicomputer system that was running BASIC
time-sharing for 32 users. Wrote some programs for it, including a
compiler that accepted a "structured" BASIC language with block
structure, local variables, long variable names etc. and output a
plain HP 2000 BASIC program that would run on that system.
Another user wrote a userfriendly editor to edit the program text.

Googling for it I found that someone still collects programs for it,
but unfortunately I have discarded my box full of papertapes last year
when cleaning out the cellar.

That's something which will pop up into your regret consciousness :-(.
I have quite a few regrets but most of them were out of my control.
If I was prescient, I would have "stolen" DEC materials and
stored them in my house.

The per desktop cost of computing today is as low as you want it to be.
A Raspberry Pi has plenty of power for office work and costs less than
a decent keyboard and way less than a decent monitor.

You totally misunderstand me.

In the commercial world, offices running IT kit have an avvpunting rem
that tries to calculate the cost of the employee in wages and NI, the
cost of the physical space he occupies including things like aircon and
a janitor, and the cost of putting a suitable worlkstation on that desktop.

A Raspeberry PI doesn't come under 'suitable workstation;'

At one point, a Windows equipped PC, with software licenses, technical
support to fix it every other day, and depreciation was reckoned to cost
a City company upwards of £3000 ($5000) p.a.

Not huge in terms of £75k salaries of course.

There has been some recent surveys showing that the large organisations
that HAVE embraced Linux for the desktop has been doing extremely well
thereby. Also financially.

Some of the US brokerage houses are showcases.

Yes, a raspberry pi is too lame; except where you just need a plain
terminal and forme entry web browser for some corporate stuff.

But look at the higher end SOCs, like the odroid. The xu4 is about
par with an intel i5, and it costs $70. Plus a micro-sd card ($40-$120
depending on size and speed), keyboard, mouse and video.

You could get a very workable computer for $250. You can reinstall
the OS and apps by swapping the SD card out. Making a master SD card
for a corporate system is pretty easy; and enforce source control
for all documents. We have the tools, had them for decades. Now is the
time to let the general office worker use them.

And it can work on DC from a battery bank easily too, giving you
and instant UPS.

I am equipping a NOC room with these, 30 xu4s and the same amount
of screens, simple USB switches for 4 keyboards+mice. The screens
are 65% of the total cost.

Or you can buy the chromebooks and du a guest OS install. They are
around $220 to $450, everything inclusive.

And when it comes to applications needing windows; I have now used
Linux/BSD/QNX for more than a decade and have consulted intensively
with around 10 different organisations. None have required any windows
apps; except on servers accessed by web.

I have even been appinted to make the reference 'word' and 'excel'
documents, because the open source apps make them very much more
compatible with all windows/macos etc versions.

Indeed. These days once you have a keyboard, screen and mouse, the CPU
is almost nothing costwise.

And Linux is nominally free.

Kinda, almost, maybe.
It's not the hardware but application compatibility
with what's happening today and in the near future. And maintenance/upgrades.

We keep reinventing things.
First were "smart terminals" to offload SOME of the mundane work from the CPU.
Then X-terminals for graphics.
Then "thin clients" for splitting the work
between the display processor and the server.
That's now being reinvented as Cloud Services, Software-as-a-service, Platform-as-a-service.

Only 10 years ago, NJIT had a few banks of Sun SunRay "thin client" terminals
and lotsa Windows PCs.
I wanted to use the SunRay terminals but the browser could not handle
many of the 'rich media' sites I needed to use.
It was not the hardware, just a lack of interest
in installing and maintaining the required support environment.

>>> A Raspberry Pi has plenty of power for office work

Huh? I'm using a BeagleBone Black: faster CPU, more memory
and it's just too weak :-(
In particular, the web browser keeps bombing.
With no way to add RAM, it's just too limited to run as "thin client"
with today's expectations of a full web experience.

>There has been some recent surveys showing that the large organisations
>that HAVE embraced Linux for the desktop has been doing extremely well
>thereby. Also financially.
>
>Some of the US brokerage houses are showcases.

Back in the 90s, many brokerages

a) used X-terminals so if anything broke, the broker just used another terminal.
Nothing was local.
All processing was delegated to the "back end" servers.

b) used Sun workstations.
Enough CPU, RAM and disk space to run some analytics locally,
and correlate feeds as each user/broker required.
And wonderfully networked.

Now with the "mobile workforce" and BYOD (bring your own device),
many offices only provide a monitor, keyboard, mouse and network link.

In 1983 we ran a BBS that at the most had 34 logged on people on an
8Mhz 8086 with QNX as the OS. This was 16 via X.25, 16 via modems and
one on the console and one on a networked (arcnet) pc.

Even running X.25 in software.

The CPU held up just fine, but the disk started to thrash a bit with
these loads.

As long as nothing started overwriting the kernel.

You set up the stack pointer by using IOWD on a PDP-10.
Any register could be used but it was recommended not to
use 0. Our "standard" for user programs (a.k.a CUSPs)
used P=17.

A stack pointer could be switched with another stack pointer
if you wanted to.

A lot of processors didn't have stack pointers until quite late, e.g. all
the ICL 1900 mainframes. I think the IBM S/360 and S/370 may not have had
them either.

The first ICL[1] machine to have one was the ICL 2900, which was heavily
stack based.

Indeed, though the ME29, which just squeaked in ahead of the general 2900
release, may have had a stack. I remember playing with one in 1980 that
was set up to be a workstation with mouse and portrait-mode screen - the
first system I ever saw with a WIMP user interface.

IIRC the ME29 also formed the guts of the 2900 DFC (Disk File Controller)
and the earlier 2903, which was essentially an office furniture styled
box with DFC hardware inside and a chunk of microcode added to make it
run 1900 software. I used the 2903 quite a lot and liked it, but never
got to find out what lay beneath the microcode layer.

The S/360 has 16 general registers so implementing stacks is not hard.
It has no dedicated stack instructions.

A series of articles in the IBM Systems Journal in 1964 described the
design of S/360. They considered making it a stack machine like the
Burroughs ones, but decided that registers would give better
performance over the range of implementations they foresaw.

Don't knock it. You could run your stuff on a PDP-8, turn the machine

In the '80s I bought a 1969 Nova 1200 from a pal, which had been in
storage. We loaded it into a truck, and drove it a few miles to my
house, unloaded it, and set it up in my spare bedroom.

When he came by the next day to help me cable it all up and get it
running, he said "Wait -- before we turn it on, make sure the console
terminal is plugged in -- I wanna see if something works..."

"What?", I ask him.

"You'll see -- or not."

We turn the machine on, and a series of asterisks starts printing on the
console.

"HOT DAMN!", he cried, "I turned this machine off seven years ago, but
before I did I loaded a program that does nothing but print to the
console ... I wanted to see if it stuck even after years of storage and
moving about."
