Actually, the free update period starts when the new OS has been officially
announced with a release date. Either way, Alan is out of luck in that
regard. But considering that the OS will probably only $20 to $30, and be
licensed for all his Macs, that's not a bad deal.

Fuzzy memory here, but at one point, didn't Apple annouce that anyone
who bought a Mac within the last X days (I think X was like 30 or 90)
was eligible for a free upgrade ?

Would Apple use the date the computer "registered" itself when first
connected to Internet, or would it use a sales database where the serial
number is logged at time of sale ?

In the former case, you could wait until Mavericks ship date is
announced to first power up your machine and register it. At which
point, Apple would think your machine is eligible for free upgrade.

In the later case, you can't cheat because serial number was logged at
time of sale.

It's based on the purchased date on your sales receipt / invoice. If
you choose not to use your new Mac for years, then that's your choice,
but you won't qualify for a free upgrade to Mac OS X 10.15. (And yes,
there are people stupid enough ot do this - I know one person who
bought a second Windows PC as a "backup" and it's still stting unused
in the original box years later.)

I thought there was a period before the release that was also covered -
about a month - for newly bought Macs.

That could be; I do know that whatever the period is, it won't be stated
until the release date is announced.

Current rumors are that the release date will be announced on October 15,
with invitations to the event issued on October 8.

10.9 will probably be release on the 18th (2 weeks after the GM) as that
is their normal<1> schedule.

That has nothing to do with when an event will be held to announce it
(and the new Mac Pro).

The reported 15 October event could be any of numerous releases
rumoured to be up-coming: Mavericks, MacBook Pro, Mac Pro, iPad ... or
according to some people even the highly rumoured (and unlikely) iWatch
or iTV.

It's unlikely to be all of those in one go, but it could be a couple at
the same time.

You usually are. With the new iMac having been released before
Mavericks, the same will probably apply this time and the upgrade date
will possibly start at that release date of those models.

The same also happens with many other companies, e.g. Abode's Creative
applications (until they stupidly went to the rental scheme).

You can still buy CS6-PS ($699.00, or $199.00 if you own CS5-PS) - but
this is (officially) the last buyable version.

I have CS5. I don't intend to rent s/w that doesn't "work" daily for
me. If they rented it on a basis of "work done" ($/Tflop) then I would
consider it.

Alan means when Mavericks is officially released. Usually anyone who
bought a new Mac (including from Apple's refurb store) or a new OS
version within the last X days before that do get a free upgrade.

I bought my Mac mini just after Mountain Lion came out and was eligible
for a free upgrade from the pre-installed Lion. The upgrade wasn't
entirely automatic however: the shop gave me a printout with a URL to
visit where I could fill out purchase details (dealer, serial number
etc) and claim my upgrade.
