And the 8086 came back to live with Pentrium 3 and then in the 2000s, went 64 bits, got decent memroy controler. Don't underestimate Intel's capability to turn around.

But two differences now, versus the 1980s-2000s are 1) the availability of leading edge contract fabs, and 2) the lower influence of MDF (Marketing Development Funds). When contract fabs first became available they were at least two generations behind Intel's fabs. Now they are about two generations ahead. Intel also had a huge advantage in terms of having the cash to provide MDF (Marketing Development Funds) to their x86 customers to help convince them to use Intel x96 processors. Having worked for a motherboard manufacturer, and two Intel x86 competitors, I saw the influence of MDF first hand. Have you ever had a top-tier PC manufacturer as a customer and the day before their new product announcement, after the design was complete and a contract manufacturer was ready to begin mass production, they cancel the product because a competitor rushed in with a boatload of MDF in order to get the PC manufacturer to switch x86 processors? I have. Amusingly they switched to a processor, with 3x the tdp (thermal design power), for their mini-notebook, and it was an unsuccessful product due to about half the battery life that they would otherwise have gotten. Have you ever had an x86 manufacturer "advise" you that it would be unwise to design a motherboard with their competitor's processor if you wanted to continue receiving advanced design guides for upcoming new processors? I have. MDF doesn't work so well anymore, and you can see it with AMD's success with Ryzen. There's even a case study on MDF and Intel <https://wiglafjournal.com/intel-market-development-funds-and-distributors/>. AMD has made a stunning comeback with Ryzen, and the success of their ATI acquisition. Intel still doesn't have any high-end graphics chips to compete against AMD or Nvidia. But as you said, don't underestimate Intel's capability to turn things around. They currently have nearly $26 billion in cash. Too bad they didn't jump at the chance to acquire Nvidia or ATI. Now Nvidia may purchase ARM from Softbank <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-07-22/softbank-s-chip-company-arm-is-said-to-attract-nvidia-interest> and become more of a competitor to AMD and Intel.

HP has a bunch of Ryzen based machines now. For high-performance workstations, post SPARC, it was Xeon only for a long time. But now AMD has launched the Ryzen Pro and we'll see if that makes any inroads in the workstation and server market.

A higher performance one, a mid range and the very low power one. IPhones are fitted with a SOc that include a mic of mid and high poerr cores. the watch has the low power core(s). You can achieve these differences by simply adding a lower cock to the lower power ones with the same core design. Saves megabucks in design. For a desktop, Apple can kit thye SoC to have only high power cores. For laptops, p]erhaps one low poer one and the rest are high power. Given the high price of a Mac Pro, they could certainly decide to do an Axx SOC with 4 GPUs and not turn them all on unless a customer pays extra. They also have to think about thermals. Separate video cards, each with their own thermal solution, are a lot easier to manage than trying to have 4 GPUs on one chip. I recall doing the layout on a tablet and we intentionally put the GPU as far from the CPU as possible because especially in a fanless system you want to physically separate the high-power devices. If they do an ARM version of a future Mac Pro I would suspect that they also do a PCI-E interface chip, or integrate a PCI-E interface into the Axx. It would be impractical to put multiple GPUs on the main board given the thermal issues.

All CPU manufacturers bin their chips based on power consumption and speed, as well as on functionality that may not work on all parts.
