OS-X Server has been retargetted as a workgroup adminitation tool for managing users and storage, much less as the traditional Unix server with Apache, Postfix and all the software around it (such as squirrel mail for web acces sto mail). You are wrong. to support PCI-e mounted external GPUs, you need a CPU which has data paths to a PCI-e bus. Litterally paths for electrons to travel from CPU to the PCI-e controller and then to the bus itself. (or have the controller inside the Soc with data paths). So the SoC needs to be designed to connect to a PCI-e bus, which the current A-xx chips do not have. And PCI-e support is not necessary for Laptops and iMacs which do not have expansion capabilities internally. Remember that when you power on, there is no OS, no driver. The system needs to have the data paths to access the buses, and needs to have firmware to drive it. So the system really needs to be designed and built to support its config. This is why my 2013 MacPro, despite lacking PCIe expansion slots uses PCI-e to hardwire the 2 GPUs to the CPU. And how other Macs that use different GPUs also use PCIe hardwires to the CPU. the ARM based Macs will have GPUs that are not only inside the SoC chip, but will have direct connection to RAM instead of using a PCIe bus to connecto the CPU. Supporting Thunderbolt means the CPU will have i/o ports to a Thunderbolt controller. Using Thunderbolt to plug in a PCI-e enclosure means the enclosure has the PCIe controller and hardware, and that it then tunnels the PCIE traffic back to the machine using the Thunderbolt connection and inside the machine, the signals travel through Thunderbold wires, the Thunderbolt controller and thunderbolt i/o port into the SoC. It is the software which then processes the data received to treat it as PCIe data. This is the same arrangement as my SATA disks in a SATA to Thunderbolt enclosure. My MacPro 2013 has no suppport for SATA, no SATA disk controller. It has a Thunderbolt hardware which handles the signals, and it is the Thgunderbold software driver which then takes a packet and hands it off to a SATA disk software driver as there is no SATA hardware. They are TUNNELED on Thunderbolt. You really have to learn to understand. The hardware innside the CPU chip that deal with I/O ports and the physical controller handles Thunderbold packets and signals and the 20 pins needed by Thunderbolt. It has no capability to handle the 80 pins needed for PCIe.
