You take desktop usage, and then claim that it is the whole story. You simply ignore the fact that 90% of the internet servers are linux machines. Nearly all NAS systems are linux machines. You don't count the 30+ million raspberry sold and used (they ALL run linux, and it is VERY useable as a desktop, too). The embeddable market is HUGE, and it is 99.9% linux. If you count all that, linux is in fact a much bigger market than OSX/MacOS. And programmers tend to be much smarter than you could ever hope to be. What you simply don't rate at all is the fact that a lot of programmers doing multi-system programming do all their programming on linux, as it is much more friendly system for those programmers than anything else. It is simple to run the compilers / setup-systems on windows / MacOS with the same source code later to get native versions for windows / macos. It is much more efficient to to the development and testing on linux, as it is MUCH faster than windows, which in turn is still faster than MacOS. Compiling the EXACT same source code of my biggest project (around 200.000 lines of C++ code) takes 3 times as long on windows, but nearly 5 times as long on MacOS, using similar specd computers. The gain in development speed is important, and it is due to the fact that linux itself is much faster. The toolset is in all cases the same, even down to the subversion, just the linux/windows/macos version of the toolset. And that was BEFORE the switch to Catalina. I don't really care for the new features of Catalina, but both the 2 iMacs and the Macbook in my family are slower now than they were on High Sierra. Apple did a really bad job there. And the last time I ran the compiling routine on a Mac for that project was under High Sierra. So the numbers are even more at odds for Catalina, making it even less suitable for programming tasks

When Intel and HP gave up on Itanium replacing 8086 desktops, they focused on the 64 bit server market with Itanium. Itanium didn't pan out. And when AMD bought out 64 bit 8086, Intel had to follow suit. Coinciding with this was the final donation of the EV7 Alpha IP to Intel which allowed it to create not only the 64 bit 8086, but also a memory controller that made multi codre chips work fast. (though Intel did not fully implement what they got from DEC as Alpha had coherent cache between cores, the CSI/Quickpath did not initially (not sure about now). Cue now: Intel hasn't had any injection of new technology and design ideas since the laste 2000s, no injection of engineers from Digital or others. So no major jumps and only incrememtal improvements and even at that, not that great when you consider they aren't on the latest and greatest mask sizes. Companies liek PA Secmi (now Apple), ARM and even AMD are the ones who got the good engineers. But what is also clear is that the 8086 which dates from the late 1970s is an old architecture, and eventually, no matter how many crutches you add to it, iumporvements become harder and harder. The focus is on adding cores, not making each core more efficient because that has become really hard for an old architecture line 8086, especially with all the fancy complex instructions that were added in the past. Apple's design is very neat in that those "fancy instructions" are implemented as separate peripheral such as neural engine, adn secure enclave that do disk encryption, without lcuttering the cores with that complexity so Apple has easier job at imploving the simpler cores. And that is one reason Apple will get its Axx chips improved at faster pace than Intel or AMD's 8086s.

You missed one of the biggest issues, and it's that Intel has fallen so far behind TSMC in process technology. Intel used to be two generations ahead of contract fabs like TSMC. Now they are more than a generation behind due to a series of missteps. If you recall when Apple moved from PowerPC to x86 it was because Intel offered much lower tDP.

On the other hand, no MacPro in the past ever got CPU upgrades from Apple, so a precedent exists of the 2019 MacPro being a dead end from an upgrade point of view. It will continue to run OS-X for enough years to please current owners. I was ridiculed months ago for suggesting an ARM card and raising the issue of how to make it work. And likely an iMac. Remains to be seen when MacBook Pro and iMac Pro will come out. They may have to wait till 2021 depeding on when Apple can release a higher performance chip. Or Apple could surprise and release the "Pro" models in December, at which point it is just a question of marketing decisions on when to release lower performance models. It all depends on what sort of performance the A14 derivative for Macs will have.

In the past there were add-on processor cards for Apple computers, to enable running different operating systems, but they were made by a third party. On current machines, Intel CPUs with internal graphics don't use the internal graphics if a PCI-E graphics card is plugged in. No reason why the same thing can't be the case here. An ARM plug-in card would make more sense than an x86 plug-in card. You could also add multiple high-end graphics cards. Whatever they end up doing they're going to have to keep supporting PCI-E graphics cards and have some way to run Windows without negatively affecting performance, if they want to continue the Mac Pro line. It's a lot of development, design, and support work for a product that sells in low volumes.
