The GPUs > Apple has developed for use in iDevices are certainly quite good, and > have more than enough performance for many Mac users as well. They certainly do, including games, when METAL is used. The problem is aht most game programmers do not writ eht low level stuff to manage 3D assest and shading and such, but use a on-the shelf environment like the Unreal Engine and ... um, darn, forgot the name of the other large one. Unity? Yes, that sounds right. Unreal does have a METAL version, and Unreal 5 comes out for Apple Silicon Macs, that should shut up a whole lot of people about the possibility of gaming on the Mac. I mean, Zen Garden demo came out 6 years ago, and it's still pretty damn impressive (using Unreal Engine 4 for METAL) and that is running on 6 year-old hardware (iPhone 7) which can still run the current version of iOS. > I just thought that there might be advantages to continuing to use > discrete GPUs from a vendor that is widely used in the industry. There are definitely things you want discrete GPUs for, but what Apple considers the use-case for a discrete GPU is not what most people do. For Apple, the discrete GPU is used for heavy lifting processing to assist and speed up the processing of the base machine, they do no look at GPUs as a gaming resource at all. This has been annoying for years (decades) and Apple has made some poor decisions (IMO). However, it seems like METAL is an excellent option that could easily handle the majority of gaming. The question, of course, is if it gets any uptick from developers. But the ability to run some of the Unreal games from iOS on macOS will likely act as a prod to these game studios. Maybe. > didn't mention Nvidia because Apple doesn't seem to have a workable > relationship with them at this time. NVIDIA insists on writing its own drivers and Apple will not allow that. In fact, Apple is moving away from anyone writing any drivers for anything. (slight, but only slight, axagerration). > I didn't mention Intel and its new GPUs because I don't think they're > intended for the things Macs are typically used for. I don't know anything about Intel's GPUs. Their integrated GPUs are decent enough for what they are intended for. Certainly I have no issues playing back any video at any size on my Mac mini, and if I don't want to customize settings, encoding h.264 and h.265 is very very fast, but for anything outside of that, the integrated GPUs fall over very quickly. -- "Are you pondering what I'm pondering?" The CPU manufacturer guides you every step of the way, gives you reference design boards, and does design reviews of your board. Much of a board stays the same even when there is new CPU and chipset. Rarely does the board design involve more than one or two engineers to do the design and layout. I recall having an engineer come into my lab for help debugging their motherboard and me asking him how long he was with the company. He said "I started the company, and I design the boards." This was Charles Liang, Chairman/Pres/CEO/Founder of SuperMicro. They wisely got out of the commodity desktop PC motherboard business and now do servers and high-end workstations. Designing laptop motherboards is another issue entirely. It's much more complex of a task due to space constraints and thermal considerations.

You are confusing making a Intel chip based-motherboard with designing a new motherboard for a chip that has no reference design and no reference motherboard. ARM doesn't design motherboards. ARM doesn't check your motherboard. You worked in a tiny segment that is entirely irrelevant to what Apple is doing. If you've ever seen the inside of a modern Mac you would know that Apple's motherboard are not like some mini ATX board. -- And the three men I admire most, the father son and the holly ghost they caught the last train for the coast...

The Mac Pro is Apple's flagship model. It has value to them even beyond its actual sales. I definitely don't think that they'd farm it out to some other company and then stick an Apple label on it. I'm not sure if the first ARM Mac Pro will have the same performance as a current Intel Mac Pro. Perhaps the first ARM ones will come in somewhere lower in the range? However, even if the first ones aren't super powerful, I'd bet that it won't be long before an ARM Mac Pro is more powerful than the current Intel ones. It's still possible that Intel will be able to shape up and compete with AMD, ARM, RISC V, etc. However, right now they look a lot like a dead man walking, at least in terms of CPUs.

That's a big problem then since every foray into other markets has not worked out well. They've tried Flash memory (sold to Micron), LTE and 5G modems (sold to Apple), ARM devices (sold to Marvell), embedded SOCs, and even shoving low-end x86 chips into Android tablets. The only thing that has excellent margins is the high-performance x86 CPUs. Now they've even fallen behind AMD in mobile x86 processors which was once unthinkable, plus AMD has the high-end GPUs that Intel lacks.

Apple has stated they are transitioning *all* their Macs to Apple Silicon, so that includes the iMac Pro and Mac Pro, but they will almost certainly be the very last Mac models to make the switch and likely 2-3 years away. In the long run keeping some Macs on Intel chips would be a bad option and waste of time for the programming teams.

In the long run not having some intel Macs will send independend programmers to windows and linux. Apple is now already a relativly bad programming platform for anyone not doing apple programming exclusivly. Forcing programmers doing multi-platform work to absolutely must have non-apple computers just to do their work will send several to reconsider their options. I have 2 iMacs, one Macbook, iPad and iPhone here. And I will certainly not switch to Apple-ARM on computers. I will simply replace apple- devices with non-apple brands when they are too old. Apple using customers are still vastly in the minority. I will ignore that customer base instead. For every apple using customer there are 6-7 windows using ones

Choice is good. Whatever anyone wants to believe, Apple *is* switching all their Macs to Apple Silicon - they've already said so. It's completely senseless for them to do anything else. In the long term, a half-assed job with some Mac models on Apple Silicon and some staying on Intel (or AMD) is simply going to be too messy and problematic for everyone. Of course, the long-term goal is very likely to also combine the macOS and iOS / iPadOS into a single operating system. It could even be to drop one product line entirely - dropping MacBooks and having just super-iPads is the most obvious route now that iPads can use external keyboards, mice, and storage. Maybe in 10, 20 years time there will no longer be a "Mac", just a range of various sized iPad devices, including big versions for desktop use (maybe even something along the lines of the old Microsoft table device).

That is not what their announcement stated. It was very carefully worded. Read carefully. "This will give the Mac industry-leading performance per watt." Not industry leading performance, but industry leading performance per watt. Almost certainly true given the power consumption of Intel CPUs. "Apple will continue to support and release new versions of macOS for Intel-based Macs for years to come, and has exciting new Intel-based Macs in development." They understand that many users require Intel based Macs, and are still designing new ones. At some point they will advise users to do a "lifetime buy" of new Intel based Macs because they will no longer be manufactured. Also, while they did state the transition for Macs will be complete in two years, they didn't say anything specific about the Mac Pro. Will it continue to be Xeon based or will it just be dropped. It makes no sense to try to build a Mac Pro with an ARM processor and internal GPU. Yet developing additional ARM based chips for a Mac Pro, given the relatively low sales, makes no sense, nor does continuing OS development for a low-volume product.

Almost certainly true given the power consumption of Intel CPUs. performance per watt does *not* mean a subset of macs will transition to arm while the remainder does not. apple also said performance per watt for the intel transition, which took 9 months from the first intel mac to *all* macs being intel. > "Apple will continue to support and release new versions of macOS for > Intel-based Macs for years to come, software support, just as they did with the previous transitions. > and has exciting new Intel-based > Macs in development." macs which had been planned before the transition was put in motion, and there's no reason to discard them now. it's also not possible to transition every mac all at once. > They understand that many users require Intel based Macs, and are still > designing new ones. they aren't designing new intel macs. that ship has sailed. the intel macs to be released were planned and basically done. all future macs in development are going to be apple silicon. > At some point they will advise users to do a > "lifetime buy" of new Intel based Macs because they will no longer be > manufactured. nonsense, nor would anyone want to do a 'lifetime buy' of something that is already obsolete. > Also, while they did state the transition for Macs will be complete in > two years, they didn't say anything specific about the Mac Pro. they didn't say anything specific about any mac in particular because the transition is for *all* macs, not a subset. > Will it > continue to be Xeon based or will it just be dropped. But announcing the transition will be complete in less than 2 years is a strong singnal that new new Intel based Macs will be released by then. Intel Macs had become prisoners of Intel's release cycle. No point releasing an updated model if Intel's chips don't get a singnificant enougfh improvement to warrant the marketing costs of a new Apple model. Linus Tech Tips on Youtube took apart a recent Mac and found the cooling to be insufficient (so Intel CPU is thorttled most of time). He realised that with an Axx chip's lower power consumption, the cooling would be perfect and speculated the model was designed with the Axx chip in mind so likely one of the first to get updated. Just as PowerPC OS-X was released until I think Tiger, I suspect that MacOS will get new releases on Intel for a number of years, probably 5 from now, 3 from last sale of a Mac. (with security fixes after that(. However, it doesn't mean that Intel based Macs will be on parity with regards to features Ability to run IOS executables likely won't happen. And new graphical fancy features won't be ported to Macs that use AMD GPUs. > Also, while they did state the transition for Macs will be complete in > two years, they didn't say anything specific about the Mac Pro. The transition will be complete within 2 years. The Mac pro is a niche low sales computer. If they dont make a Axx model of it, there is no reason to continue to make it on Intel chips because continuing the sale of a single 8086 based machine means your timer to end support of 8086 OS-X cannot start. Apple will want to end new versions of OS-X/MacOS on x86 as soon as it can. > continue to be Xeon based or will it just be dropped. It makes no sense > to try to build a Mac Pro with an ARM processor and internal GPU. This is the $64,000 question. One possibility is multiple CPUs. With each SoC coming with say 8 cores and a GPU, stack 4 of those and you have quite a lot of power for both CPU and GPU, albeit you don't have the advantage of having 32 cores in the single chip from a cache access point of view. And I suspect Apple knows internally what the plan is.

The correct interpretation is that by end of transition within 2 years, all the Mac models on sale will be ARM based. > Of course, the long-term goal is very likely to also combine the macOS > and iOS / iPadOS into a single operating system. How Apple deals with the difference between the "Locked" file system on IOS and the normal file system on MacOS will be interesting. Apple has already moved to lock down the OS-X one with SIP and hiding certain directories, but still lets you aorganize files the way you want, whereas on IOS, files "belong" to an application specicic directory, but Apple has relaxed the rules by allowing permission to share with other apps, and now the "Files" applications which might morph into "Finder". Note that during keynote, Apple mentioned Unix apps, so it looks to me like Apple will continue to allow switches to disable "IOS" restrictions to use MacOS as a computer. Note that this was announced a long time ago by Steve Jobs with his Back To Mac keynote. The arrival of Catalyst was the first VERY visible sign of it, and now it is becoming more and more obviious where Apple is heading with it.
