I should have said, it's not just Siri, it's all the other silly gimmick voice recognition systems as well that aren't really used by the vast majority of device owners, whether that's Apple, Windoze, or Google.

This seems like a rather silly debate. Either you find it useful, as apparently many do, or, like me, you don't. Neither is the 'correct' answer. A bigger issue than usefulness is privacy. I'm only mildly concerned about this where Siri or Cortana are concerned, but I'd have strong reservations about using Google Assistant (or possibly Alexa). I don't use it as a novelty. I use it to get info quickly and it
succeeds often. Unfortunately it can't decipher French well when in
English "mode" so makes errors with many name or things.
But I do use it.
Note on my SO's Watch, the error rate is far lower. Probably a better
microphone/noise reduction/sampling system.

Yep. I got that book when it was released back then. It was sure
expensive, heavy, huge, and very technical. I still have it! :D

If oyu've got something like a Scots accent, then you can forget it ever undstanding you. One of many reason speech "recognition" will never be a replacement for entering text into computers andwhy these automated phone system that insist on using such things are ridiculously stupid. The NZ tax department started using a ridiculous speech "recognition" system a few years ago on their help desk phone to supposedly speed up assisance, and it's utterly useless and can't understand much of anything (no doubt the real reason for using it was to put people off trying to ring them!).

Ditto. Sure, we can covered up our webcams easily with a tape, but mic
is not possible unless physically disconnected. :(
