quicktime is the underlying multimedia technology built into the os.

quicktime player is one of many apps that uses quicktime.

quicktime player 7 uses quicktime 7 and will stop working when qt7
does, which will be next year, along with other apps that use qt7.

quicktime player uses quicktime x (avfoundation) and will continue to
work because qtx won't stop working.

All that Sandman cares about is that Sandman gets to broadcast his poorly written flyer and then hang up and giggle about it. The fact that Snit (a real advocate) is an innocent patsy on the other end of the phone is the game. Despite Sandman's claim that he has "no experience in making automated posts" (a lie as exposed by the fact that he annoyed everyone in COLA) he was seen asking IT departments how they would install a virus remotely.

Sandman does not know if there is a encumbered FOSS program to handle such tasks. Was that meant to be your best shot? I just configured a KF and won't be impacted by the flooding. Sandman's idiocy has made an absolute cesspool of usenet via Google Groups, so I don't make an attempt reading your posts with my phone anymore. One thing he has accomplished with this behavior is that the Sandman ban has been shown to clearly be the right thing.

What is your evidence?

Who doesn't know that this kind of hooey is Sandman's modus operandi, not the modus operandi of Snit (a real advocate)? It's all just nonsense... the endless posting, the sock puppets, the writing of gibberish, the temper... the diaper rash and tendency to show how ashamed he is over being kicked from the schoolyard for shitting in it again... all of it.

Quicktime X, as you almost pointed out, is not quicktime, it is
AVFoundation. Quicktime will be gone in 10.15 and has been deprecated
since AVFoundation came out.

QuickTime does not support x265 video, nor does it support 4K, or if it
dies, it does it very poorly.

it's still called quicktime and the player app is called quicktime
player, even though it's using avfoundation under the hood.

quicktime player 7 has no issue playing 4k video, assuming the computer
can handle the data rate, which anything recent can.

Not really. The underlying multimedia technology built in to the OS
is AV Foundation. QuickTime has been deprecated a long time, though it's
still worked and will continue to work until 10.14.

deprecated means it will go away eventually, which will be the version
of macos that follows mojave.

for now, it's still there.

It also means that it is recommended that it not be used for any new
programs and that any maintained programs be switched to the new APIs.
QuickTime has been deprecated so long that any program that is still
under any level of support should have updated.

that's true, but existing apps that use it will still work as long as
they don't upgrade past mojave, which is when it moves from deprecated
to no longer available.

Quicktime Player 7 Pro was never meant to actually be an proper movie
editor though. It was meant to play movies, hence the name containing
*Player*. iMovie was Apple's proper 'cheap' editing app.

To use your analogy, Quicktime Player is the tricycle and iMovie is a
Korean car ... which I guess makes Quicktime Player X a pair of shoes
and Adobe Premiere a Ferrari. ;-)

There's a similar issue with newer versions of Preview (and soon
QuickLook) gaining editing abilities, but is not really designed to be
an proper editor.

iMovie is a big step up from trying to edit movies in Quicktime Player
7 Pro. It could be a replacement from a user's point of view, but isn't
as easy to use (but still easier than the likes of Adobe Premiere or
Final Cut Pro).

iMovie (released 1999) predates Quicktime Player 7 (released 2005), so
isn't a replacement in a software sense.

Hmm, I will have to see if my client's Mac OS v10.12.6 has QT Player v7.

They don't unless they paid Apple a registration fee and downloaded it.

It comes with OSX at no extra cost. Define free.

OS X is now free as well.

The only cost involved (other than time) is either buying the Mac in
the first place or if you're upgrading to an older, paid-for version of
OS X.

His wish is to see Snit chased away by idiotic lying. And hey, that could kill this group.

Off Peter Kohlmann goes to the housing in the overfull latrine of my KF.

For most I would just suspect it is dubious. Of course, given that it's Peter Kohlmann I would skip that doubt and go straight to 'lie' because that's most of what he does. Innocent until proven guilty does not apply to Peter Kohlmann.

Snit will not be seen once the waters are overfished. That and there will repeatedly be a butthurt insomniac or more in an unmoderated usenet group (hint: Peter Kohlmann). The specifics of the bullshit aside, we have all seen who uncontrollably gets enraged when he doesn't get a response.

Linux offers the least of everything to the average user. It was Peter Kohlmann who got busted using untold numbers of accounts over and over, and these are 'people' who come literally out of the blue straight into threads where he was being proved wrong... over and over for over a decade.

quicktime x is built into macos and is what replaced quicktime 7,
however, it has significantly fewer features, thus the 'upgrade' to the
older and more capable version.

you can still install quicktime 7 but i'm not sure if you can buy
quicktime pro anymore or if qt pro is required for the rotate.

I just checked. It is v10.4 from last year. So, how do I launch this app
directly from Photos app to easily edit/rotate and save back into it? I didn't
see any QT options. Or does my "illiterate" client have to tedious of manual
copying back and forth?

quicktime x won't work. you need to upgrade to quicktime 7.

<https://support.apple.com/kb/dl923?locale=en_US>

once that's done, do one of:

- launch quicktime player 7, choose open... and open the video like any
other file

- contextual click the video, choose open with..., then choose
quicktime 7 player from the flyout menu.

- put quicktime player 7 in the dock and then drag the video to the
dock icon.

then open movie properties (cmd-j), click on the video track, visual
settings tab and rotate as needed.

you may need quicktime pro to rotate it.
you will need quicktime pro to save the rotated video.

So 7 Pro is not free. What's a good free alternative just to do a basic
orientation rotation?

Nothing free, AFAIK. There were video conversion and editing programs, but
they cost money. If VLC won't do the rotation, you'll have to live with it as
is.

Isn't handbrake free?
