Out of curiosity, what has replaced Quicktime in terms of framework to
play videos?

When the Quicktime framework goes away, does this imply that the
Quicktime app goes too, or would that app be updated to make use of
whatever framework is available to play movies? (or has it already been
updated as of High Sierra ?

What still makes use of Quicktime in terms of popular apps?

Quicktime hasn't and isn't going anywhere. It used for a ton of stuff,
not just playing videos.

"Quicktime Player 7" was replaced by "Quicktime Player X" a while back.

Question still stand: does Quicktime (ciurrently Quicktime X) still rely
on the Quicktime framework to render videos, or did it evolve to
avfoundation as the underlying engine?

If it is still relying on quicktime as engine, would Apple update the
app or produce a new media player app?

otool -L /Applications/QuickTime\ Player.app/Contents/MacOS/QuickTime\ Player
is your friend. You'll see all the frameworks linked in QT X binary - there is
no QuickTime.framework. There is QuickTime.framework if you run the same
command on QT 7.

Chemical engineers do it in packed.

Thanks. was wondering about existence of such a tool. So one could
script this to scan through all apps that make use of frameworks that
will be retired.

Question: say an app makes use of Quicktime when you import a video
(think word processors where you can embed a video instead of a picture).

Would the app still launch and run correctly up until the time you try a
fuinction that would rely on quicktime?

(aka: is link to quicktime framework does at image activation time or
done only when you request such a function in the app ?)

Here are some of the scripted posts from Jonas Eklundh... the script adds a nonsense or irrelevant insult or accusation after most sentences and adds numbers to the text so he can better track his trolling:

<https://groups.google.com/d/msg/comp.os.linux.advocacy/RZtEyvJr8HI/VcEqOk2qCgAJ> or <https://goo.gl/67NLfr>.

You can see a run of three scripted flood posts from his primary account.

From: Sandman <mr@sandman.net>
Message-ID: <sandman-b7df8761d3b6831e96d5976e9e67f379@individual.net>
X-Trace: individual.net +MPBYFbnugFd2iPraU5I9ABV/5ZlNHtqj79Ij19mAYCfL5sHI=
User-Agent: Sandmania 2.0

He also has them elsewhere, here are some examples:

<https://groups.google.com/d/msg/comp.os.linux.advocacy/Xetqyi1T0F0/cvoqp3eqCgAJ> OR <https://goo.gl/jy0rsr>.

<https://groups.google.com/d/msg/comp.os.linux.advocacy/10d0Emx_ABk/eN0r1_epCgAJ> OR <https://goo.gl/Rkz0PO>.

On that one he has a run of two.

And a longer and clearly scripted, content-free flood post:

The QuickTime framework certainly will be going away. The Platforms
State of the Union address at WWDC listed QuickTime as one of the 32-bit
frameworks that will be removed in macOS 10.15 next year.

Applications which depend on QuickTime or other parts of Carbon are all
32-bit and cannot update to 64-bit without eliminating their use of
QuickTime and other parts of Carbon. If that doesn't happen, the
application won't work in macOS 10.15.

Obvious applications that won't work any more:

QuickTime Player 7
Final Cut Pro 7

All QuickTime components will cease to be useful, e.g Perian, Apple's
MPEG-2 codec and Flip4Mac at least in its role as a QuickTime codec.

I see that EyeTV has an "MPEG Support" QuickTime component. EyeTV is
32-bit, uses QuickTime, and a major rewrite is apparently in progress.

I expect MPEG StreamClip won't survive because it uses QuickTime and
hasn't been updated for six years.

For everything else, we only need to consider 32-bit applications that
are still supported by the developer. With developer tools installed,
otool -L can be used to examine which frameworks are used by an
application's executable file.

> "Quicktime Player 7" was replaced by "Quicktime Player X" a while back.

QuickTime Player (X) in High Sierra uses AVFoundation.

It also references QTKit, which is a Cocoa framework that provides an
Objective C interface to the QuickTime framework, but it doesn't
directly reference the QuickTime framework. I expect the use of QTKit is
for invoking QuickTime components for converting older video formats.

QTKit will also be going away so I expect the macOS Mojave or macOS
10.15 version of QuickTime Player will eliminate the dependency on QTKit
and indirect dependency on QuickTime. That may mean it loses the ability
to convert at least some older video formats.

Is there a means to test a video file to know whether it an be handled
by avfoundation or requires older quyicktime codecs?

akaL: scan system for videos that need converting to newer codec/format
now, before we lose the ability to do so.

or does ffmpeg basically cover the whole gamut and quicktime framework
not absolutely necessary for those older videos ?

everything will play, other than old videos with obsolete codecs.

reformulating question:

Is there a way to scan through videos to find out those that have
obsolete codecs whose playback will not be supported once quicktime
framework goes ?

sure, but as usual, you're overthinking it.

just about anything that plays in quicktime 7 will play in quicktime x.

quicktime movies from the 90s might have problems no matter what you do.

Once Michael Glasser Snit appreciated how successful Zeus is at portraying himself as the 'victim' he sees this is not nearly as bizarre as it sounded. Can you get less dishonest?

Zeus is a pinhead people have auto-read his puppets/shills. What he really needs is a bot that keeps switching names, then bot posts have a shot at being a fraction as bothersome as he is. Do you believe the idiocy Zeus is pushing? And in retaliation you have nothing but an attempt to start something.

After the latest update I no longer have a working system. Thanks CentOS! Over and over, the refrain is he wants to "talk tech", but Zeus spends most of his time whining about "Slrn". Zeus and Michael Glasser Snit both lie constantly and outrageously and continue to do so. So no incentive in showing any further care or restraint.

Protected code is being built into Fedora. Jonas Eklundh Communication AB suffers from paranoid drug trips so, to him, everything, even responses to his idiocy, are "abuses". Who DOESN'T know this?

Steve Petruzzellis pwns Jonas Eklundh Communication AB in every way possible.

The normal CODECS aren't going anywhere either (although possibly some
rarely used ones might get discontinued). They're part of Quicktime
itself, and Quicktime is not going anywhere. The exception could be
CODECS that are plug-ins for Quicktime (such as Flip4Mac), but those
will be up to their developer to update.

As for finding movie files that use "obsolete" CODECS, you're probably
stuck to a "try it and see" approach, although macOS 10.14 Mojave's new
meta-data sidebar might tell you which CODEC each is using ... as you
select them one at a time.

It would be nice if Apple made the 32bit APIs as an optional install for

It will be an "optional install" ... by using a third-party emaultion /
virtualisation app to run an older macOS version. ;-)

Oh goodness, that is just tons of bunk.

You're clueless! His dream is to see Michael Glasser Snit frightened off by idiotic lying. And hey, that could work.
