Here's why. The upgrade to 10.10.3 comes with Photos. Okay, I'll try it. Oh, but (ehlo) it won't import any of our iPhoto libraries, not even the one that I created with 10.10.2. So, it's a piece of fucking shit from the start. I'm glad I did the upgrade on a test machine, because we'll be sticking with Mavericks on our real machine(s). So, iPhoto is 100% better than Photos BECAUSE WE CAN'T FUCKING USE PHOTOS with our iPhoto libraries. Jesus-H-Fucking-Christ. Apparently, under the watchful gaze of Dead Steve, if you haven't upgraded your iPhoto to 9.6.3, then you've been royally butt-fucked by a greedy and stupid Big American Company. I can probably find a pirate copy of 9.6.3 somewhere, but. Here come the clamheads ... -- Where's the Vangelis music? Pris' tongue is sticking out in in the wide shot after Batty has kissed her. OK, that is an actual problem, which you've never mentioned. However, that is certainly not typical. > Apparently, under the watchful gaze of Dead Steve, if you haven't > upgraded your iPhoto to 9.6.3, then you've been royally butt-fucked by a > greedy and stupid Big American Company. I can probably find a pirate > copy of 9.6.3 somewhere, but. I have 9.6.1 which the App Store claims is the latest. If you are using a much older version of iPhoto then I am not at all surprised that Photos will not update your library. I would also not be surprised if a future version of Photos was able to update older iPhoto libraries, but I would not count on it. *ANY* Version of iPhoto on your computer should be able to update via Software update to 9.6.1 though. -- Nothing says poor craftsmanship more than wrinkled duct tape.

Look better. Photos has 1) much better editing that iPhoto did and 2)
supports plugins from apps like Pixelmator, Flare 2, and others which
means that, effectively, it will be MUCH better.
We'll have to wait a bit on the extensions, I suppose. But probably not
too long.

Regardless iPhoto is gone from this Mac after the 10.10.3 update and I
don't know why, or where it might have gone, and it is not going to
cause me any particular distress other than the lingering mystery.
This is just my opinion. Photos seems to me to be an OSX interpretation
of the iOS Photos app, and intended for iOS device photo shooters. It
has the equivalent of the Camera Roll library with the same editing
features found in the iOS app.
Trackpad gestures provide the same touch screen navigation feel found
on iOS devices. Very nice to give those iPhone photographers an easy
learning curve to climb, but it just cannot be compared to what was
provided by the dead apps Aperture & iPhoto.
None of that makes Photos a particularly good photo editor, or image
library. Having the ability to use plug-ins in such a tool is a patch
job. Rather just use Pixelmator, Affinity Photo, or Lightroom &/or
Photoshop CC or Elements. I can't see any user of a digital camera who
shoots RAW files ever considering Photos.
For me, I am not going to waste much more time with Photos, especially
since photographs from my iPhone are automatically synced to my desktop
Lightroom 5 via Lightroom Mobile.

It has quite advanced editing features though. Much more than iPhoto.

What did iPhoto let you do that Photos doesn't? I haven't found
anything at all in a couple of months.

Pictures are split up into groups depending on the level you're looking at, just like in iOS. If you are lloking at the whole library, you will see groups of years. If I click on 2013 I see groups for Yellowstone, Cody, Little Bighorn Battlefiled, Devil's Tower, Mount Rushmore, a group for Denver and Colorado Springs, etc right up through Christmas. If I click on one of those groups, I get finer granularity and more groups with fewer pictures in them. So, one can still use iPhoto even if one has upgraded? That's my understanding. Probably a good idea to deep six Photos* so it doesn't get launched accidentally and work put in that won't translate back to iPhotos. I am rolling over to Photos, can't get excited one way or another. * Safer bet: compress it then trash the app.

Let's face it, neither one was/is particularly good. Basic yes, but
that is about it, and I'll concede that Photos has added some filter
effects features. If that is all you need for posting your iPhone pix
to Facetime or Twitter aftersome rudimentary tweaking then Photos will
probably be just fine for you.
For me, just as iPhoto didn't provide what I needed, neither does
Photos, so for now I will stick to my Lightroom+Photoshop workflow.

Then I have no idea what happened to the copy I had installed in
10.10.2. That said, it is no loss as I wasn't using it anyway. It just
seems strange that it vaporized from this Mac on upgrade.
Furthermore, I can't see that I will be using *Photos* in any
meaningful way anytime soon. Perhaps just as a conduit for iPhoto
shots. Even that is just a thought as I have some quite powerful iOS
editing apps in Photoshop Touch, Photoshot Mix, Lightroom Mobile, and
Pixelmator, All allow me better editing tools than those in *Photos*.
If all you are doing is loading camera shots and preping for social
media then *Photos* will do.

By the way, I've only played with it a bit, but it looks as if Photos removed the event titles, given events in iPhoto. Am I missing something?

Not on my Mac after the update. > By the way, I've only played with it a bit, but it looks as if Photos > removed the event titles, given events in iPhoto. Am I missing > something? Nope. Events is like iPhoto & Aperture, history. It is a simplified editor/photo manager to make iOS users feel comfortable. Photos is not a case of less is more. Sometimes minimalism sucks. -- Regards, Savageduck
