Perhaps a dumb question, and perhaps an artifact of the news server I
use, but I'm puzzled by the lack of a group specifically for Apple's
"iOS" system for iPhones/iPads/iPod Touch. I'm a newbie to iOS (having
just purchased an iPod Touch), and while the available documentation is
quite good, there are still times when polling "the wisdom of the group"
of other users would be helpful...

There are three separate groups which cover different categories of
devices running iOS. They were created at different times based on
slotting things into the existing hierarchy (or creating a new
subcategory in one case) so aren't particularly easy to spot:

comp.mobile.ipad
misc.phone.mobile.iphone
rec.media.players.portable.ipod

The latter is most appropriate for discussion specific to the iPod
Touch, but the iPhone group will usually overlap with the iPod Touch,
and is much more active.

There's also "comp.mac.ipad", but it isn't really "active".

Plus a few regionalised ones for non-English users:
    de.alt.comm.iphone+ipad+co
    de.alt.fan.ipod
    free.it.musica.ipod
    it-alt.comp.sys.ipod
    fr.comp.sys.iphone
    hr.alt.cellular.gsm.iphone
    it-alt.tlc.cellulari.iphone
    it.tlc.cellulari.iphone

There may be more on other newsservers.

There is an iPad group and a iPhone group, but no 'ios' group.

comp.mobile.ipad
misc.phone.mobile.iphone

If your ISP supports the "newsgroups" command, you can type these
commands at the command line:

     newsgroups ios
     newsgroups ipad
     newsgroups ipod
     newsgroups iphone

The evolution of newsgroups sometimes fouls neat organizational structures.

misc.phone.mobile.iphone

came into being at some point after Apple launched the iPhone - at that
time its OS was not called iOS.

Then comp.mobile.ipad came into being after that product was launched.

I believe iOS was created (as a name) sometime before iPad and referred
to the OS in the iPhone and iPod.

All of the above sort of prevented a hierarchically "proper" newsgroup
naming.

David mentions rec.media.players.portable.ipod but I have no idea when
that came into being.

(Yes, I know these things can be looked up for hysterical accuracy but,
really ...)

And it would, in no case, belong under comp.sys.mac anyway.

I'd support a comp.sys.ios newsgroup.

There are iPhone topics, there are iPad topics, and there are iOS

Sure - and they are covered well enough in the 2 groups named. If you
want to bang your head a bit and create a big 8 group for iOS, then by
all means...

All the more reason to give it a proper place in the hierarchy. With
Apple TV and the ever-expected iWatch, or any other iOS-based devices
they might be dreaming up, now would be a good time to do some
housekeeping.

Keep in mind that the iPad newsgroup was started because subscribers to
the iPhone newsgroup didn't like the fact that the iPad was being
discussed there. So maybe the fragmentation is a good thing. But if
you want to pursue the possibility of creating a new iOS newsgroup (and
folding the existing iPad and iPhone newsgroups into it), here's a good
start:

Oh, I’m right there with you. My suggestion was *not* to group all those
things together in one groups, but to point out that a comp.sys.ios.*
would support a number of sub-hierarchies that catered to particular iOS
interests.

Like these?

comp.sys.ios.ipad
comp.sys.ios.iphone
comp.sys.ios.ipodtouch
comp.sys.ios.appletv
comp.sys.ios.system

I would hazard a guess that the overwhelming majority of traffic would
be in comp.sys.ios.system.

Based on current hierarchies, I’d say something more like:

comp.sys.ios.apps
comp.sys.ios.hardware.(device type)
comp.sys.ios.misc
comp.sys.ios.programmer

I’d skip .system in favor of .misc, because most users don’t think of
the OS per se when they’re interacting with their device.

That and .apps, just like it is for the comp.sys.mac groups (and
presumably most other comp.sys sub-hierarchies). If we really wanted
to adjust the hierarchies based on traffic, we could drop 90% of the
groups these days.

Usenet is dying - it's full of spammers and know-nothing knob-heads.
It's really not worth all the hassle trying to set up new newsgroups
since the vast majority of people use web forums these days.

The only people who use iPhones are dumb idiots who want everything to be simplistic to the extreme. And the only thing they use it for is to take their almost erotic 'selfies'

As if they want to go on newsgroups
