Then I guess Signal is not to be, then? I mean, it's not much harder than
that. If you want $20k for developing it and people aren't willing to pay
you that, then you won't develop it, problem solved, right?

Yes, I do. Stop lying about what I want or do not want.

Huh? I said I want a new newsreader, not just *ANY* new newsreader. It's
not like if a hobo came up with a CD to me and said there was a news reader
on it I would pay him money to get it. If I am to invest money in something
I want to be sure that I am getting my money's worth, as would most people
I gather.

Of course not.

Indeed. And I am currently doing exactly that.

Huh? I've used MT-NW for decades and I am currently using slrn. I've even
told you this. Why try to make this about the "commercial" market? I do own
Unison as well, of course.

Uh, I didn't mean you hadn't done any development, but you're here because
you want financial support for developing a software product, are you not?
That was what I was in reference to.

And in many cases, that's just how it is. No one that is currently voting
"no" with their wallet with regards to your project will be surprised if it
doesn't become a product, you know.

Right. There’s still plenty of time for other people to hear about it and
show interest. I’m also going to add a perk next week that might get some
takers. Otherwise, yeah, this is how the sausage gets made. Normally the
decision is made behind closed doors, so consider this your peek into why
developers aren’t flocking to create Usenet apps on the Mac (or iOS).

I’m looking at the evidence, not what you’re self-reporting. You don’t
seem to be paying anyone to develop custom software for you, and you don’t
seem to be willing to pool in with other people to get semi-custom
development done, and you don’t seem to be willing to use an existing
commercial product. I’m at a loss trying to determine what sort of
market you *do* represent.

Well what amount are you looking to invest, and what more due diligence do
you need to do? I’m sitting right here, so long as the amount is greater
than $nothing.

No, I’m trying to determine if the users, such as you, who continually say
they want a new newsreader actually are interested in sufficient numbers
to cover the costs of the necessary development. Some clearly are, and
have demonstrated it. Others have employed more…questionable thinking.

Based on all the hemming and hawing they do, it sure seems like they’re
surprised that they can’t get a free lunch anymore. If I had money in the
bank like Apple does, sure, I could afford to give Signal away. Reality
dictates other plans.

It's all about supply and demand. There isn't a huge demand for usenet
clients on the Mac, plus there has been a solid supply (with MT-NW) up
intil Mavericks. Now the supply is lesser, but a lot of people make do with
the lesser clients.

You have no evidence. As faras you know, I may have invested in 30
different usenet client projects in the last week. All I've said is that I
won't be putting up money up front for YOUR news client. That's no evidence
for the absolute claim you just made.

> not what you’re self-reporting. You don’t seem to be paying anyone to
> develop custom software for you

On what information do you base this claim? What is it that I said that
ever gave you the idea that I don't pay people to develop custom software
for me? Because I know it's blatantly false, and as far as I know, I
haven't said anything that points to the contrary. You're becoming an
arrogant asshole the more I speak with you. What's the point with this?

> and you don’t seem to be willing to pool in with other people to get

You mean, other than the many other kickstarter projects I've hlped fund,
which I've been talking about? You mean apart from those? You have a
preconcieved notion about me and/or other and are just ignoring reality to
make it fit.

> and you don’t seem to be willing to use an existing commercial product.

On what do you base this? I *expliclty* told you that I would have no
problem paying for Signal when/if it becomes available and if it's any
good. You're just making stuff up as you go along here now.

> I’m at a loss trying to determine what sort of market you *do* represent.

Mostly it's the upscale refined software market. I use freeware/oss
software if it makes sense, or if it's the best for the job, but I use
professional commercial software when it serves my needs best.

Well, Unison is $30, and it's pretty crap. For a decent news client, I
would have no problem paying $60 or even $100. Quality software deserves a
good price. Crap software, not so much.

How could I be? If I am voting "no" with my wallet and the product isn't
being made, the outcome would be just in line with my vote, wouldn't it? I
mean, I would much sooner be surprised if it WAS developed, right?

While you're busy insulting those that won't give you money without getting
a product in return right away, aren't you afraid that some that may have
been favorable to your project will realise that you're not a very pleasant
person and perhaps change their mind?

I keep coming back to the image of a beggar that calls everyone walking by

They *CAN* get a free lunch. There are free news clients available for
them. Thunderbird is a popular one. A bit buggy, but still a free lunch.

So don't, then. Problem solved. Go on with your life and stop whining on
usenet that people won't invest in your idea.

This is more than unfair. Your carping has understandably caused the
OP to reply and answer as best as he can. Then accuse him of whining!
What would satisfy you, that he agree to put his tail between his legs
and slink off?

Uh, no. There has been no "carping" from me. I responded to his OP with a
link to a blog post I had written earlier about features I want in Unison,
with the intention that those ideas might help him with feedback on his
project.

I later also said that I would have no problem paying for a good news
reader.

He has since lied about my motivations and made ridiculous claims about me
not "wanting" a new news reader, in spite of me saying exactly that, based
on the fact that I won't put down money beforehand on HIS future news
client.

> Then accuse him of whining! What would satisfy you, that he agree to put

I would be satisified if he came here asking for advice, features and ideas
for his project, and not lie about those of us that won't pay him today for
what he might release tomorrow.

I have no problem with him wanting to fund his project, nor do I consider
it a bad idea. I'm just not one of those that would be interested in
funding it. If the end result is any good, I might pay for it. If there
never is an end result because he couldn't get proper fudning, that's ok
with me as well.

It is unfair to make out that OP has come here to whine. If you and
others had not been so negative about something that could not
possibly affect you, he would not have needed to complain about your
stances, arguments and attitudes which you have chosen to call
whining.

And if he came here to propose something, not to particularly ask for
advice, it would be a bad thing to do? Surely not.

No, lying about what I need is a typical "bad thing to do". You asked what
would satisfy *me* and I responded.

OK, Mr. Very Literal when it suits you, you implied that he was here
whining often and I was making a point which you continue to miss or
pretend to miss (I prefer the former, the latter would require more
self awareness). That it is not whining he does and his objections and
retorts are in response to not very fair or reasonable posts from some
of you.

If a post is not positive and supportive, it could be neutral rather
than negative. I would not describe a welt of posts that have caused
him to respond to the extent that you call whining as neutral. Guess
what's left? That's it, Watson, negative.

You had a number of criteria for what would satisfy you besides him
"lying", I was focussed on that. I will not go into this charge of
lying though it seems hardly fair. Perhaps I should remind you,
something that a lot of upset people seem to ignore, that lying almost
always means deliberately saying things you know are false.

Yea? Well, he (Doc) brought it all upon himself.

I just think it's important that when you make claims about others, you
actually make sure they did what you claim they did.

> you implied that he was here whining often

No, I didn't. The word "often" is not in my quote above. Stop making things
up. YOur credibility goes out the window when you do.

You failed to quote one single post of mine that expressed a negative view
about his project. The odd thing is that you didn't retract your claim and
apologized for making a claim you can't back up, but you stood by it.
Curious.

How could it not? If a person lies, is it not "fair" to call them a liar?

Which is exactly what happened.

While I don't know IF happens all that often, I can sure as shit see WHY
it doesn't happen all that often...

I lost track of this topic about a hundred posts ago.

I could be wrong, but wasn't there something about a new Newsreader

And if you think the prospect is unattractive, try to imagine YouTube
commenters meeting each other. As much as the level of discourse has
fallen on Usenet (and more in this thread that I would have ever
expected), the Eternal September that hit other social networks sure
seems to be a lot worse.

The thread’s taken so many twists and turns that even I don’t know
anymore. :-)

Wow... somebody actually remembers what "eternal september" refers to -
besides the Usenet Provider, I mean.

Surprisingly, it's more common than you think. There's a gang in
alt.usenet.kooks who travel great distances to get together with each
other, for some bizarre reason; I can't imagine that any of them are
very good company. The people from the old folklore.urban group
apparently all moved into a yurt together.

I wouldn't mind having a cold beer with dorayme, but she lives 10,000
miles away.

All this began somewhat in that vein (using Usenet as a social network ala
Facebook), and even though he wasn't asking for it, he got some advice (get
the IETF to support the increased consumption of resources), but he doesn't
seem interested in doing that.

As for funding, I see two possibilities. Usenet as a social network is best
handled with venture capital. Make a business plan, get a team of engineers
together, and bang it out, quickly. If it's just another newsreader, any
experienced Usenet user who knows programming (and what he wants) should be
able to get that roughed out in his spare time, perhaps with the help of
some users/beta testers/other programmers, and then look for funding (what
the author of MailMate did - that campaign included a user agent that was
already working quite well).

Because the only purpose for social media to exist is the enrichment of
some venture capitalists looking for the next Facebook or Twitter,
whereby Big Info can capture yet more information about us so that we
can be more efficiently exploited by supply siders. Great idea! That
way we can use the tens of millions of dollars that US taxpayers put
into the development of the Internet to benefit a tiny part of the
private sector even more efficently instead of primarily benefitting the
taxpayers.

For somone like Doc, with no money, it is a great idea. The principals
of FB, Twitter, et al., are now quite wealthy. And Big Info is going to
get your data, no matter what. Except maybe in the EU. Probably there,
too.

By the way, in case you missed it (or have just plain forgotten), social
media was Doc's idea, not mine. I argued strongly against it.

Huh?

Your train of thought has dereailed.

I'm already done, and have been for 20 years now. Time flies!

MailMate, by the way, is progressing nicely, and the support it's being
given is 100% first class in every possible way. Well worth the US$50.

For you, perhaps. Looking at their website, MailMate has nothing unique
that I want and certainly nothing for which I'd pay such an exorbitant
price.
