One of the class projects in second grade was to pass around a bottle of creme, each of us shaking it a few minutes before passing it on. By the end we had a jar of butter and buttermilk, and ate the butter on saltine crackers. -- :-<> Siri Seal of Disavowal #000-001. Disavowed. Denied. Deleted. 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' They're not being told this is what you have from now on. They're being told this is how a previous generation had it. We have kids who do school topics on WWI life in the trenches at Mons and Paschendaele. Not preparing to go and live like that; but getting to understand what it was like. We have kids learning about the battle of Hastings in 1066; and they're not planning to go and form a shield-wall on the top of Senlac Hill; but getting to understand what it was like. We have kids researching life under the British Raj in India; and they're not planning to go and reconquer the country; but getting to understand what it was like. That's all part of a rounded education; seeing how we got to where we are and how it's moulded and changed us all. It helps tremendously in creating people who can empathise better, sympathise better, be better leaders of others. Ed

I kept the Pickett Slide Rule my father proudly gave me for a high
