no.

snow leopard, or 10.6, is a few years old.

the latest version of os x is mavericks, or 10.9. mavericks is also a
free upgrade and will run on most intel macs.

This is what I call stable:

Presently the uptime of my 10.9.1 system is 30 days, 2 hours and 27
minutes. Since the latest update that required rebooting that is.

Snow Leopard may be the latest version of OS X that will run on certain
very old Macs. For example, my old Mac Pro 1,1 had this "feature".

Depending on where you're looking, Snow Leopard may also be the latest
version you can buy on physical media or in anormal shop, thanks to
Apple's rather silly decision to move to *only* downloads. :-(

Isn't it also the case that Snow Leopard is the last one that contained
Rosetta, i.e., would run PPC code on Intel machines?

Yep, which is why I bought an iMac just before Apple started
shipping them with 10.7.

Sure your MacPro1.1 will run Lion 10.7.5. - I do this on my own
MacPro1.1 sep.2007.

The first 'MacPro' - the latest PowerPC G5 2,0ghz, 2,5ghz & 2,7ghz will
not run systems newer than 10.5.8.

The MacPros 1.1 & 2.1 (2006-2007) runs up to and including Lion 10.7.5.
The MacPro 3.1, 4.1 & 5.1 will run anything available from 10.6.x to
10.9.x. Though minimum requirements for these models vary from 10.5.8 to
10.6.4.

I don't believe there was any 2,000ghz or 2,500ghz or 2,700ghz CPUs.
You may have meant the latest PowerPC G5 2.0ghz, 2.5ghz & 2.7ghz

The nickname for the G5 2,0ghz and 2,5ghz was 'MacPro', but it isnot
Intel CPUs...

according to this link it is 10.7.x for XServe 2008 and 10.8.x and
10.9.x for XServe 2009 models... XServe 2009 MUST have either 10.6.l8 or
10.7.x installed to be able to upgrade. Seems as it isn't possible to
make a 'clean' install of Mavericks on the 2009 models...

no it wasn't.

a g5 tower was called a powermac g5.

when apple switched to intel, they renamed several models to use the
prefix mac- rather than power-. the powermac g5 became a mac pro, the
powerbook became a macbook pro and the ibook became a macbook.

It is possible to do a clean install of Mavericks on any Mac which
supports Mavericks, including a 2009 Xserve. You just need to create a
bootable installer. Apple even has a document pointing you in the right
direction.

No, that's three versions old. Since then there has been Lion, Mountain
Lion, and Mavericks.
