#57628 — Snow Leopard Server won't install

FromKit <kitzyme@yahoo.co.uk>

SubjectSnow Leopard Server won't install
Message-ID<2014030520412170798-kitzyme@yahoocouk>
I bought Snow Leopard Server (10.6.3) so that I could run it as a guest
OS on Fusion 6.0.2 on my Mini (Mavericks). Because the Mini doesn’t
have an optical drive, I made a dmg of the SL Server install disk on my
G5 and copied the dmg to the Mini.

Then I started up Fusion, chose intall from image and selected the SL
Server dmg. It went into what appeared to be an OSX startup screen
(Grey apple on grey background with the ‘working’ cogwheel under it.
Then the Apple icon turned into the ‘not allowed’ no-entry-type icon
and it stuck there.

So to test the dmg I mounted it on the desktop and tried to run an
install on two external hard drives. One had no OS on it and the other
had a Mavericks installed. On the former it said it couldn’t install
because it disn’t have OSX on it and on the latter it said it needed to
have OSX 10.6.3 on it before it can install.

Can SL Server really only install on a drive that already has a version
of OSX on it?

If so, how can I get it onto a Fusion VM when Fusion refuses to allow
the non-server versions of Leopard or Snow Leopard?

I know that post Snow Leopard, the "server" version was just an
application that installed over an existing client OS instance to turn
it into a server instance.

Is it possible that Snow Leppard Server disk you got requires a Snow
Leopard client already be installed ?

My Xserve came pre-installed with it, but I do have a CD of "Mac OS-X
Server" Install Disc" (and a separate one for Admin Tools). The Server
Install is tagged as "for hardware bundle only, not to be sold separatly".

This is what is on the top directory:

Is it possible that the no-bundle version is built to be installed over
a client version of Snow Leopard ?

It's described as "Mac OS X Server Snow Leopard Unlimited Client - ( v.
10.6.3 ) - complete pack"

Part Number on box is: MC588Z/A

If it does need to be installed over a client then it doesbn't say so
in the instructions. The only place it seems to indicate thatb is
during installation.

Where did you get it from - from Apple? Can you find the part number on
the box?

That is definitely the right product.
I haven't tried to install OS X Server before. Is there an Installation
Options button anywhere during the install process?

After agreeing to the SLA it goes straight to choosing the disk on
which to install. It says the two disks I have attached at the moment
aren't suitable. From reading around I suspect that they could be made
suitable by erasing/repartitioning them but I don't want to lose the
data. I'll try another disk that can be erased tomorrow (it's getting
toward midnight here at the moment).

Presuming the installation disk works on the erasable drive tomorrow,
it means that the problem lies elsewhere than with the installation
disk. So I will still need to work out why the Fusion VM starts an
Apple boot and then stops. If there is an error log I've not yet found
it.

For reference, Snow Leopard Server (and earlier) does not require
installation on top of an existing OS X. I've installed both Leopard
Server and Snow Leopard Server directly on compatible Macs with erased
drives, using the respective retail DVDs.

I've also installed 10.6 Server from a disk image in a VMware Fusion VM
with a blank virtual drive. I don't recall exactly when I did this, so
I'm not sure which computer and version of VMware Fusion I was using at
the time.

I think it was an early minor version of VMware Fusion 4, which would
mean the installation was done on my Mid 2010 MacBook Pro. That computer
is too new to boot from from 10.6 or 10.6.3 retail DVDs (it was
introduced with a custom build of 10.6.3, and wasn't supported by the
general release of Snow Leopard until about 10.6.5), so the VM was able
to boot the 10.6 Server DVD but the host computer couldn't.

Since then, that VM has been copied to my Late 2013 MacBook Pro, now
running OS X 10.9.2, and I've upgraded to VMware Fusion 6 (which
triggered an upgrade of the VM), but I haven't tried installing 10.6
Server (or 10.6.3 Server) in VMware Fusion 6.

I don't have my server DVDs or disk images handy, so I can't try again
right now, but could in a few hours if I have time this evening.

> Presuming the installation disk works on the erasable drive tomorrow,

Given the symptom (grey Apple then "no entry" sign), that indicates the
problem is OS X (probably the kernel) rejecting the computer as
incompatible. This might be due to something wrong with the VM settings
such as insufficient memory, or VMware Fusion 6's virtual machine isn't
recognised by the kernel as a supported Mac model.

Starting up the VM in verbose mode may reveal some useful clues, but
note that the timing of doing this with a VM is a bit tricky.

1. Start the VM.

2. As soon as the VM window and hand cursor appear, click in the VM
window so that keystrokes are being directed to the VM.

3. Immediately press and hold Command-V to trigger verbose mode. Hold
them until you see the black screen with white text.

You need to complete step 3 by the time the grey "vmware" splash screen
is replaced by the grey screen with the Apple logo.

It is a little easier if the VM has just been shut down with the window
left open, in which case you can click on the big play button in the
window and step 2 is achieved by clicking again almost immediately.

Got it now, and it works. I am in the process of installing 10.6.3
Server in a new VM.

Here is my setup.

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2013, Retina)
Mac OS X 10.9.2
External optical drive to read the DVD
VMware Fusion 6.0.2
DVD is the install disc from MC588Z/A "MAC OS X SERVER V10.6.3 REV 1"

Steps I took to get to this point:

1. Insert 10.6.3 Server DVD into optical drive and wait for it to mount.

2. Run Disk Utility.

3. Click on the icon for the optical drive (left margin), not the
indented icon for the volume.

4. From the File menu, choose New > Disk Image from [device name]. In my
case the device name was "disk1" but that will vary depending on the
order in which drives are recognised by the OS.

5. In the save dialog, the default Image Format of "compressed" is OK,
as is the default file extension of ".dmg". A compressed disk image
saves about 1 GB of disk space compared to a DVD/CD Master.

6. Wait for the image to be created.

7. Eject the DVD to ensure I'm working from the disk image.

8. Launch VMware Fusion.

9. Create a new VM (I clicked the + "Add" button in the Virtual Machine
Library window, then "New..." from the contextual menu).

10. Choose the default option to install from a disc or image, then
Continue.

11. Click "Use another disc or disc image..."

12. Choose the file saved in step 6, OK, then Continue.

13. Choose the operating system: Apple Mac OS X > Mac OS X Server
64-bit, then Continue.

14. I used default settings for the VM (40 GB hard disk, 1 GB memory).

15. Finish.

16. Specify the file in which to save the VM, OK.

The VM started up, booted normally and was able to install the operating
system. (While writing this, it finished installing and is ready for the
initial setup questions.)

The question then is why it isn't working for Kit. Assuming the DVD
itself is OK, and the image was created using the correct mode, the only
other idea which occurs to me is if the specific Mac model (or more
particularly a virtualised version of its processor) is not compatible
with OS X 10.6.3.

There is a knowledge base article on VMware's web site which mentions an
issue in this area for trying to install 10.6.3 Server on a Mac with a
Core i5, Core i7, Nehalem or Westmere processor, but it dates back to
VMware Fusion 3 and was last updated in 2010.

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1026103

My Mac has a Core i7 from the Haswell series (latest available) and it
works, so it would surprise me if a slightly earlier processor
generation didn't also work with VMware Fusion 6.

This thread on the VMware forums mentions that Fusion hides the hardware
from the OS. It also mentions that Fusion 5 and 6 may have problems
creating a VM from the physical DVD and you need to create a disk image
(correctly) to work around the problem.

https://communities.vmware.com/thread/457351

This document (referenced from that thread) shows the disk image
creation steps.

to install into a VMware Fusion virtual machine]

That's basically the same procedure I used to create a 10.6 *client* VM.
Works great!

(One difference is rather than using a virtual disk for the VM storage, I
used a partition on a hard drive I'm using as a Boot Camp drive - also
for a VM.)

Same version of VMware Fusion?

If OS X 10.6 client worked with VMware Fusion 6, their code to check
must be broken again. It was broken in version 4.1.0, which was rapidly
pulled and replaced with 4.1.1 (which refused to allow installing 10.6
client, like versions prior to 4.1.0). 4.1.0 was also removed from their
archives of old versions.

I would have expected the checks to apply whether using a virtual disk
or a real one.

When I get a chance, I'll try installing 10.6 client in a VM (on a
virtual disk), just to see if it still rejected.

I have it running in VMware Fusion 6.0.2 right now. Not sure what
version I was at when I originally created the VM. It's been a year or
so since I initially set it up. I think the way around that restriction
was to install it on a physical partition/volume, and then point Fusion
to that partition/volume. Like I said, I have a Boot Camp volume I also
use for Fusion (for better speed); and I installed 10.6 on a partition
on that same volume.

David,

Thank you VERY much for goinfg to all the time and effort to give such detail.

I'll follow it all step by step and if it still doesn't work I'll look
at the forum links you gave.

Then I'll report back (it may take some time!)

Following those detailed steps made it work.
Thank you!

I'm not sure why it didn't work with all my previous attempts but I
suspect it may be related to the dmg.

Previously I'd had to make the dmg on my G5 and copy them over. This
morning I took delivery of a new external optical drive for my Mini. So
I trashed the dmg images made on the G5 and following David's steps
exactly, made a new dmg on the Mini. Then I followed the other
instructions and everything work fine.

10.6.3 server is now running in the Fusion VM and after a software
update check the combined Server update from Apple is being downloaded.

Thanks again to David and all the others who helped.

I wonder if the problem might be that the SL Server installer just
won’t work with my new Mini, which came with Mavericks and has been
updated to the latest version. The Mini info is here:-
<https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/16185032/MiniInfo.png>

The external drive is newly-erased and has a GUID partitioned:
<https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/16185032/DiskInfo.png>

The SL Server installer runs from the dmg and gets as far as choosing
the disk but won’t let me choose any, even the one just partitioned.
<https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/16185032/ServerInstallError.png>

So maybe an incompatibility between the installer and the Mini was the
reason the Fusion VM won’t work with the install disk.

I phoned Apple Support who were very friendly and tried to be as
helpful as possible but (of course) couldn’t help me with the Fusion
side of the problem. However, as regards the installer not working
they suggested that it may be incompatibility with Mavericks rather
than with the Mini hardware and that I try booting up the Mini direct
from the installer CD. So I’ve ordered an external USB optical drive to
arrive tomorrow.

Of course, that won’t help with installation on the VM, which will be
running under Mavericks.

You cannot install an older version of OS X on a mcahine than the
version that shipped with it. So no, you cannot isntall 10.6 or 10.7 or
10.8 on a mahcine that shipped with 10.9. There's a chance you might be
abe to install 10.8. Maybe.

That should not affect the VM install.

Have you tried this with your G5?

I don't know if it will work for getting it installed in a virtual
machine but it might be worth a shot.

Thanks.
At the moment anything is worth a try.
I'll give it a go!

Oops!
Sorry.
It should be .com not .co.uk
I made a mistake when I put it i=in the newsreader.
Hopefully that should be corrected now.

Thanks for your efforts - if you want to try again I'd be grateful/
