As others have stated, it's a scam. If you play their game, you'll
encounter problems, because the first thing they'll say is, "Go to the
Start" menu. As a Mac user, you're not likely to find such a native
menu item, in the tray at the bottom of your monitor display.

I had a guy with an impenetrable Indian accent call up and tell me that they'd been sending me messages about my computer was being malicious on teh Internetz and I asked "what email address did you send your messages to?" and he says "no no no, in the little yellow box pop up bottom your screen" and I fell about laughing and he hung up. -- Where's the Vangelis music? If I get one of those calls when I'm feeling bored, I try to keep the guy on the line as long as possible. I figure it's a sort of "civic duty" because there's no way I'm going to fall for his scam, and maybe I can keep some poor sod who is already running a faulty system (Windows) from getting conned further. The fun usually starts when they tell me to go for the "Start" button and I tell them (repeatedly, because they can't believe it and just think I don't know what I'm doing) that there is not one. Best response to date is when I got the guy to yell at me for wasting *his* time. Isaac

Call my phone and unless I recognize the number, I don't answer. A lot of times I don't even answer when I -do- know who's calling. Call me, and leave a message. I may call you back, but I probably won't. I may send an email instead. Also - I have a phone service which allows me to block ALL out-of-country calls by default, and it's always turned on. Also - I have caller ID rigged so that any "private caller" (i.e., no phone number displayed) can't even reach me -- caller receives pre-recorded message that the number they are calling cannot accept anonymous calls. I also have a cell phone -- but it's turned OFF almost 100% of the time. Exception, I will turn it on, but ONLY if I have to make an outgoing call. As you may have gathered, I don't enjoy talking to people on the phone!

We get a different ring for local and long-distance calls. We almot never answer the LD calls, just let the machine pick it up (we run a business, and I'd rather a legit customer leave details so I can call back with everything I need at my fingertips). This screens out 99% of the crap calls. There's a local call center that rings the local signal, but they don't call too often. -- Where's the Vangelis music? That technique may become less useful as more and more phonecalls go via the internet and only become "real" phonecalls at the local end of the connection.

Correct. My wife's brother is on our family plan, so when he calls from his home in Oklahoma City, we see it as a Houston (713) Area Code.

So my wife calls from hers when she's in Montreal, and it rings as a local call here. Nonetheless, my quick-and-dirty screening method based on how the phone rings is pretty effective. We live in a small town, and local calls are always someone we know or a wrong number (we've only got two exchanges, and people always mix them up). LD calls are usually dead air these days. Sometimes someone has died. Speaking of someone dying -- it's a shame about Philip Seymour Hoffman. Why couldn't it have been Justin Bieber? -- Where's the Vangelis music? Pris' tongue is sticking out in in the wide shot after Batty has kissed her. They have put back more tits into the Zhora dressing room scene. -- notes for Blade Runner
